Farmers’ Wives.
| “The average American farmer,” says a prominent American physician, “wears ‘out on an average two wives in the course of his own life.” The statement is an interesting one, but is borne out by vital statistics. A heavy part of the wear and tear and worry whick strain and rack the body and brain of our farm- ing communities is borne by the often unseen but important power which sways at orce the destinies of the kitchen and nursery, and the farm- yard and dairy. Our farmer house- wives receive far too little consider- ation ut home and appreciation abroad. The unending care of house and children, of clothes and kitchen, the multitarious ‘duties of real farm work in garden and pasture and dairy, and the dozen other cares and reeponsibilies which are laid on her shoulders and willingly carried, receive too little attention from the out- side world. The results of crops and breaking, of buildings ani fences, the improvements made in open air, and the waggon-loads of preduce carried at the maiket are wore tangible. They attract at once the notice of neighbors and town- mep,aud give the hardworkiug proprietor a well earned reputation for thrift and industry, But in how many instances is the success of tie farmer out of doors rendered possible by the uncomplaiving energy of the tireless worker in the home, whose genius for economy and whose labors at the churn and in the farm-yard add to the little hoard of in-
