BigRudder Is For Ferry

TRENTON, N.S. (CP)—A two- ton rudder that looks like a giant hockey stick will be ready in a few days for installation in the CNR’s ferry Prince Edward Island, Dominion Steel and Coal. Corporation announced here today (Tuesday).

The rudder, being built by Dosco’s Trenton Steel Division, will replace one wrecked by heavy ice off Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island last month.

The CNR operates the ferry between Cape Tormentine, N. B., and Borden, P.E.I.

MONTREAL (CP) — Female dancers of Les Ballets Africans | were\ asked by a Montreal police! officer Tuesday to cover up their bare bosoms for the remainder of their one - week stand at Her Majesty’s Theatre here.

Producers of the show, depict- ing the native dances of Africa, said they will comply with the re- quest, made by Lieut. Lucien Quintal, head of Montrea!’s mo- rality squad.

Lieut. Quintal attended Monday nigat’s opening performance be- fore a packed theatre. He saw the first half of the show which included two dances performed by African women unclad from the waist up. At intermission, he asked the dancers to wear bras- sieres for the second half.

Plane Crash

NAPLES (AP)—A twin-engined U.S. naval transport plane with 21 aboard failed on take off here Tuesday and crashed in flames into a horse-drawn farm cart. Three persons in the plane and an Italian workman and the horse were killed.

Ten others in the plane were injured. It carried five crew and 16 passengers.

The naval attache at the U.S Embassy in Rome = said aboard the plane were U.S. naval personnel and their dependents, including a farpily of five.

“It has been a most rewarding experience,” said the 68-year-old tariff chief. “I have served under nine finance ministers and under two political parties and at no time has theré ever been any suggestion or hint as to how the board sould operate.

“There never has been the slightest pressure on me or any board m r as to what line the board should take or what it should recommend.”

He had wanted to leave his $16,- 900-a-year post 19 months ago, but agreed to stay on at the request of Finance Minister Fleming. Now there was no turning back. The time had come to quit.

“A customs union with the U.S.? Well, it would undoubtedly hurt some of our industries. But we are a great trading nation and as long as we have our tremen- dous resources, I tisink a customs union would have over-zli benefits

LONDON AP — Sir Winston Churchill's town house has been ransacked by discrimin- ating burglars who made off with furs, jewels and several boxes of his king-sized cigars, it was. discovered Tuesday.

The*house was empty at the time. Churchill is vacationing in the south of France. Lady Churchill was away at her son-in-law's home in Kent. Police are posted at the house around the clock when the Churchills are home.

The loss was estimated at about £4,500. The insurance company offered a reward of £900 for information on the loot after Lady Churchill re- turned to the residence Tues- day night.

The jewels were valued at about £1,500, the furs at £3,- 000.

ST. JOHIN’S, Nfld (CP)—Pre- mier Smaliwood told the New- foundiand legislature Tues day that debate on Term 29 of the Confederation agreement will be delayed until Conservative members of Par- liament talk with Prime Minister Diefenbaker.

The province’s statement of claim, filed Tuesday in the Ex- chequer Court, said, in effect, that Justice Minister Fulton broke the agreement earlier this month by withholding requested police reinforcements at the height of disturbances in the log- gers’ strike.

EK alleged that Mr. Fulton, as attorney . general of Canada, al- lowed factors and persons outside the scope of the agreement to in- fluence bis decision to withhold the reinforcements sought by pro- vincial Attorney - General Leslie Curtis.
