Our gun designers would do well to bear in mind that the tank is an invention of the last war, It was developed to smash through en- trenched infantry defences, ond destroy pill boxes. For that purpose, it continues undeniably useful; and also, to force a way over rough and broken or timbered terrain. But on level battle- fields, such as the desert, where mobile artillery may be readily manoeuvred, it is a serious ques- tion whether Rommelk enterprise has not push- ed the tank into the rank of a highly specialized and not always useful weapon.

The Russians have already proved time and again that they can break up the heaviest tank onslaught: with well-directed and adequate artil- lery fire. That both tank; and artillery must have adequate fighter and dive-bomber protection goes without saying. But even there the tank is at a disadvantage compared to the highly mobile artillery such as Rommel used in Libya.

Rommel1's guns were protected by only l partial turret, similar to the gun shields of sec- ondary battcries on old line battleships, set to re- volve on top of a tank chassis. The speed with which a battery of this sort could be hauled into position, fired, and moved, proved that the fast- est tanks were only targets for these deadly guns.

The new American 155 millimetre field guns and howitzers hauled by tractors come nearest to the Rommel idea. Whether they are as mobile. being twice as heavy, is another question. But they certainly could stop any tank in its tracks long before it came within range of its objective.
