PEACH BOARD

Ontario Peach Growers will have by July 1, a marketing Board com- plete with a central selling agency tor the handling of the entire crop of trash peaches.

Once the agency begins operating it will control the sale of all fresh peaches in the province. Present dealers and wholesalers will become agents or the peach board and di- rectors are now engaged in making arrangements with dealers regarding the temis of their contracts.

A committee will be set up with representation from both agency and dealers. This committee will es- tablish prices to producers as often as necessary and notify dealers oi the minimum price they must pay producers. While present peach dealers will continue to sell as agents of the board, the central agency will itself be responsible for storing and marketing surplus pro- duce. The peach marketing board will still further add to the impres- sive total oi boards which are op- erating in Ontario in doing is mar- keting job for the farmers oi that province.

POTATO ACREAGES

.

At this time last year there did not appear to be very much dou-bt that potato plantings were at a sufficiently high level, giving normal growing conditions to produce a who advised Island farmers to keep troublesome surplus. Therefore those down their plantings were on very safe ground. This year the signs on the potato road are not quite so clear. There will be a general re- ductiqn in acreage but not one which will eliminate the possibility oi surplus production provided that they are reasonable good growing conditions.

If growing conditions prove to -be unfavorable in a number of areas—— and this does not happen very of- ten, supply and demand could quite neatly balance and result in profitable prices. For some years average production per acre has, been increasing and per eaplta con- sumption declining. These factors would appear to suggest that there is little or no room for increased plantings.

Offering advice on these matters has proven to be in the past an un- profitable business. If you are right you get little or no credit: if wrong your reputation as a Prophet falls to quite a. low level. In this in- stance we will content ourselves with suggesting that caution is in- dicated .

Kenneth H. Jones of Mortelch, Saskatchewan. has been collecting artifacts for the past. 35 years and the walls of his home bear evid- ence of his amazing collection. Among his collection are well~fil- led showcases of points or tools of ancient man on the prairies -e- bout 20,000 in all -— collected within a radius of seven miles from his home, thus proving that men lived on the prairies 10,000 to 25,000 years ago.

Mr. Jones is e methodical men and has been in the habit of dat- ing his finds. Back in 1928 Jones wrote to the Smithsonian In- stitute in Washington, D.C.. stet- ing he believed he had discover- ed a Falsom point. In short order he received a letter from Dr. H. H. Roberts of the Institute inform- ing him that such was indeed the case and that the Canadian find preceded the find at Folsom. New Mexico by two years.

The residents of Mortla ch. Saskatchewan are living in an area loaded with the history of the past and Mr. Jones has been instrumental in bringing some of that past to light. Nobody may ever fully know the story of these early people, the Indians, the aborigines of the prairies. and those aborigines now known as Falsom Men. who were here be- fore the Indians — the history of their culture is being put together bit by bit today, thousands of years after most of them have vanished from the earth.

One of these artifacts. I alone skin scraper, is now in my pos- session and all because a resident of Saskatchewan. and a former Prince Edward Islander who is a subscriber to The Guardian. thought I might be interested in owning this ancient stone knife. It's a curious thing liow warts often disappear over night, seem- ingly on their own accord. More- over it is now known that warts are caused by a virus and that they are infectious.

And here are a few superstitions about warts. Tie a cord around one wart, and the others will drop off. Tie a colored thread around a wart and bury a lock of hair under a stone and the same thing will happen to the warts.
