A SEARCH FOR A RELIGION.

Had the embassy of Emperor Wing- te, A. D. 65, of the Ming dynasty, gone 1,500 miles further in its journey in search of the incarnated god China
Christian nations in the world, and all the present trouble would have been avoided. ‘The story of the search for the incarnated god and its strange end- ing forms one of the most’ remarkable chapters in the history of a remarkable people. It is not merely that the China of 1900 hundred years again should seek the light, but that in so doing it should miss the object of that search com-pletely and yet stumble across a new and better religion—that itis the,most remarkable thing,
In order to properly understand the conditions leading to a search for t he incarnated god it will be necessary to go a little into the history of China of that day. The Ming dynasty, which ruled then, had brought China out of a slough of despond into which it had sunk because of the terrible corruption into which the precepts of Confucius and Lao-Ize had fallen. These two great teachers were to China what Mar cus Aurelius Antonius wasto the Romans. All these taught the value of the good, the necessity of doing good and other precepts based upon the same proposition. After the death of the Chinese philosophers their teachings became corrupted until Con- fucianism became another name for ceremonial usage, and Lao-Tzeism, under the name of Taoism, a worship of spirits,

Itin then, when Ghina was the most highly civilized nation, when it counted gunpowder among its_ inven- tions, that the Ming rulers sought to find the true religion—something more noble than a worship of spirits or cere- monials. While still discussing the matter rumors spread far and near that a new prophet—the incarnation of the real god—had appeared in the far west. Strange stories were whispered beneath the breath of the marvellous power of this new god—how he had raised the dead and had performed other miracles. This eventually reach ed the ears of the Emperor. Calling the literary and scientific men before him he demanded to know their opin- ions.
After a long consultation it was de- cided to send an embassy to the in carmited god, with rich offerings, and to ask him to come to China to preach the true word. Seca _ great caravan of richly decorated camels was gathered, andjmagnificent offerings leaded upon their backs. ‘There were superb silks, glittering precious stones, the choicest incense, magnificent ivory carving and the finest products of all China. At- tended by a hugh retinue of coolies and servants and soldiers, the embassy. consisting of China’s most learned men, started south along the coast line, fc: in those days it was not safe to travel to for inland. Days and weeks th caravan travelled. Each day prayers were offered to the incarnate god. On went the cavalcade, passing beyond i4¢« boundaries of China into the unknown land beyond. Everywhere the mis sion went the word of the search was passed and soon ahuge arm: entered India.

Once there the storics of the incar nate god became more circumstantial and with renewed courage theambassa dors pressed on. At last southern In- dia was reached and a positive clew discovered —at least so the embassy thought. Yes, the natives had heerd of a great prophet. He had performed miracles and had disappeared in a miraculous manner,none knew whither He had lived and was born on an

KRUGER AND HIS BURGHERS. During my two months’ captivity in the midst ot the Boers I was brought into coristant communicatin with the Boer leaders, and had frequent friendly conversations with them. All of the prominent men, without exception, ex- pressed their determination to go on fighting tothejbitter end. They were perfectly confident, moreover, of hold- ing out for at least six months longer in the Nooitgedacht district, which by the way, isa terribly hard country.
There can be no doubt that the’ Boers have plenty cf provisions, large quanti.ies of it buried for security, and leaders view with equanimity the pros- pect of having the supplies from Dela. gia bay cut off.

I can state positively that Mr. Kru- ger wishes for peace, but the fighting commanders insist upon continuing the war.f]h y argue not withcut bit -r- ness, that the President brought about the war and must therefore abide the consequences, That being so, they will prevent his flight by force if need be.
