It will carry lifethrough to other plants, The kind and the condi tion ofthe seed is, then, ofthe highest importance. There exists in am oat seed the inherited tendencies of two hundred crops that went before it. Io selecting seed it is important that these qualities should be secured: lst, power to over- come obstacles; 2ad, power to take bold of things and keep them afterwards. The kind of rvotand the kind of blade and the vigor of the whele plant depends on the seed. By sowing big seeds you will get a bigger and stronger root aod /eaf than by sowing small seeds. It is therefore very much better to row the best seeds of their kinds. The size of the crop depends largely upon the seed.

Professor Rob:rtsoa wlustrated this fact by exhibiting two bottlea of peas. Each came from the one pea planted in 1895. Ip the case of one bottle the bigger peas pro- duced were planted; the other bottle con- tained the product of the smaller peas, selected and planted by themselves in 1896 and 1897 The peas shown were the ree- pectivegproducts of three years. ‘Those which were the product of the big peas were twiee as big those which wer the product of the little peas,--thoagh the

Profedsor Macoun said that he bad been convected with the Central Experimental Farm et Ottawa for the past eleven years. But this was his firet visit to Prircr Ed- ward Island. Having been lately promot- ed to the position ot Horticulturist at the Farm, he hoped in the future to be able to eee the farmers frequently. Professor Macoun described briefly the various ex~ perimental works that were being carried on in addition tothe distribution of seeds and information for the farmers of Canada at large. There are six hundred varieties of apples at the farm as well as many varie- ties of cherries, plums, grapes, strawberries andother smal! fruits. Experiments are also being made in the growth of timber trees, the planting of which will ere long be needed io Ontarioif not here, and also in respect to ornamental shrubs and flow. ers. Profeesor Robertson proceeded to show why he thought thefarmers of Prince Edward Irland should go on te feed chickens. He said that he had observed that cold hem and chickenis now more generally calied tor at restaurants and for evening mesle than avy other dish, and he had, while in England, obtained iafor- mation which he went on todetail. FRUIT GROWING.

Protessor Macoun said that the more he saw of the Ielandthe more he was con- vinced that it was destined to become a great fruit-growing country. Bat, iarmere, to obtain good results even bere, must plant their trees in good soil—soil that is naturally good aswell as highly manured, More than that the soil should be kept good eo long as the trees are growing. ‘Tne acil should be also well drained. As to planting the trees ;should be at least 30 feet apart each way. If it be thougit that too much soil be occupied by the growing apple trees, other quick growing trees may be planted inthe space. Plum er cherry trees will yield a number of crops; and may be cut down when more room is wanted for the apple trees. Raom is needed not only for the, develop- inent of good apples, but also io enable the farmer to spray hie trees in order that insects which infest the trees may be des troyed. When planting get the best varieties of apples—thoee which have been found te gbe best adapted to our soil, those which will eel] to the best ad- vantage in the Eoglisb marketr. Buy the young trees from respousible nursery- wen rather than from outsiders.
