A violent wind and rain storm‘ took a swipe at Newfoundland| Friday while Maritimers counted the destruction in its wa e.

The storm moved quickly, buffeting the Maritimes Thurs— day and early Friday with winds gusting to more than 70 miles an hour with steady gates.

It whistled northward across central Newfoundland Friday morning with winds up to 75 miles an hour and by noon had moved north of Labrador.

Halifax harbor, usually a quiet port with its only entrance fac- ing south, was blown into tur- bulence by the southerly gale. Three ships had their hawsers damaged, but other lines held them close to position and little other damage was reported.

The university town of Sake- ville. N.B., had a brief taste of flooding. But it was mild com- pared to the high waters that caused some homes and busi- nesses to evacuate last spring.

Other Drugs Are Su5pected In Deformities

LONDON tAPi — A British medical authority said here other drugs besides thalido- mide are suspected of causing deformities in unborn babies.

He declined to identify the drugs—pending a collection of more information on them—but he said firms making them have been notified.

The authority is a doctor con- nected with the College of Gen- eral Practitioners who, because of British medical practice, was not identified by name. But he was called a spokesman for the college, an organization which promotes training for doctors in general practice.

The spokesman said that the college started a comprehensive study of congenital deformity in babies in Risa—before the tha- lidomide cases arose.

The spokesman said that in the last few weeks “we h v collected complete information regarding 1,656 pregnancies, in- cluding details of drugs given and any illness suffered. Of these 43 produced deformed ba- bies——an incidence of 2.6 per t.”

New Frozen Food Plant Announcement ls Hailed

Yesterday’s announcement by Premier Walter R. Shaw of the establishment of a $1,000,000 frozen food plant in the Monta- gue area was termed by Mon- tague Mayor Bruce H. Yeo as “the answer to his fondest dream."

He said the establishment of the largest regional high school in the province, the expected ex- pansion of the tobacco industry of the area, and this new frost- ed food plant would appear to be the answer to unemployment and would also bring additional income to the community.

Premier Shaw made the an- nouncement at a press confer- ence yesterday morning.

He said he was "delighted to announce that the Fraser Val- ley Frosted' Foods Company Limited, Chilliwack, B.C., has reached a decision to locate a $1,000,000 frozen food plant out- side Montague.
