Chinese Ancestor-Worship.
Rev. D. D. Moore writes as follows from Singapore, Straits Settlement, East Indies :
‘* Saturday night was a great one among the heathen Chinese. {[t was the conclu- sion of the annual feast connected with their ancestral-worship. One hundred ‘housand Chinese densely crowded the etrect where the brilliant festival was held. Fancy a long street, with tables extending

They took much notice of Rev. Dr. Lewing and myself, making always 4 passage for us through the crowd. This is all offered to their ancestors whom the Chinese highly venerate. Saturday night’s feast was made by the opium and brandy farmers, an association something like our licensed victuallers, to whom is sold the right to do these businesses in the Straits settlement. The expense must have been enormous, '
The spirits are supposed to partake cf the sumptuous feast, supping upon its more vthereal essence, and are highly delighted at being remembered. There is a fine sen- timent, apart from the idolatry, here, you see. These people have homes, marred, it is true, by plurality of wives. But they are remarkable for the respect they pay to parents and elders. One of my Chinese friends told me that really a more evil feature was connected with this great feast. It is partly offered to evil spirits to pro- pitiate them, especially to the devil, that he may be pleased with worship paid to him, and help the offerers to get very, very rich. When he has done this they worship him no more. Thus these poor darkened ones hope to delude the devil and cheat him.
We entered a much worse place, We also looked into opium dens, ‘The confirm- ed opium smoker is a terrible sight. The Chinese quarters, that is the poorer parts of them, are full of vile stenches. Only for our almost daily heavy showers, Singa- pore would always have fatal plagues.
An Occult Power.
A GEORGIA WOMAN POSSESSED OF A MARVELOUS FORCE—SIX STRONG MEN UNABLE TO LIFT HER FROM THE FLOOR,

The eighth wonder of the world, Mrs. Abbott, of Georgia, upon invitation of some of our prominent citizens, spent two days in the city and gave two exhibitions of her wonderful force and power. Many prominent citizens were on the stage, among whom were Mayor Dr. I. Wiltrout, Judge Reid, Drs. Johnson, Melntyre, Thomas, William, Andrews, A. P. Goss, F. Crary, C. Getchell, J. B. Prive and others.
Dr. Johnson says she is beyond doubt the most wonderful woman on this continent ; cuat she possesses some power that is un- known and cannot be explained upon any principle of known laws or forces. Six of the strongest men could not lift her. She turned around and lifted them. Four men could not pull or push a stick off her open bands.
Again Drs. Johnson and Melntyre laid their hands between her’s and the stick, while Judge Reid tried to pull it off, but it clung on as if riveted, but not the slightest pressure was felt against the gentleman's hands. She had the heaviest man sit one end of a pole and seven to swing on it to hold it down. When Dr. McIntyre placed his hand between hers and the stick she lifted the entire mass, but not the slightest pressure was felt against the doctor’s Land,
A little boy was selected from the audience, He laid his hand on Mrs. Abbott’s hand, when the little fellow was so thoroughly charged that they could not lift him from the floor. A glassor stick held against the little lady emitted a muflied vibratory noise not unlike a telephone sound. Many other tests were made. It was marvellous beyond con- ception and exceedingly interesting.
Mrs. Abbott is a very attractive lady, fabout 23 years of age, and weighs about 90
unds. She is devoid of stage airs. She

Medical experts are interested in thecase of Mrs. Wm. A. Maxson, of Trenton, N. J., who -has recovered from hydrophobia after having reached the advanced stage wherein she barked and snapped like a dog, and required three men to hold her in her spasms,
O’Brien says he relies for support of the Irish nationilist mission to America on the Irish Roman Catholic archbishops of Chi- cago and St. Paul, and on the Irish Anieri- can Catholic clergy in general. He also hopes for the sympathy of Cardinal Gib- bons in his undertaking.
There is an interesting interview with Sir Charles Tupper in a recent issue of the London Pall Mall Gazette, one of the few English papers which go in for interviews with public men. Sir Charles, as Canadian High Commissioner, is asked in this their- view the prospects for emigrants in Canada. He replies that the Dominion wants settlers for the vacant lands, with capital if but in all cases strong and industrious, able to take off their coats and be turists
in deed as well as in name. occupa- tions, the professions, clerkships and em- ployment for mechanics are y well
supplied, if not overstocked. What is need- ed is a farming population to raise wheat and cattle for the British market, and the prospects for such are excellent. Sir Charles Tupper’s views if rightly circulated, will certainly tend to stimulate the emigra- tion to Canada of the right kind of persons.
It is said that Lord Dufferin has affected a complete understanding with Premier Crispi of Italy in regard to jurisdiction in the Red Sea territory. This is satisfactory. The question has been a rather difficult one. Italy and Britain have long been firm allies; there has been nothing up to
lately to conflict with their separate in- terests; there has been very much of an ob- vious nature induce them to work to-
gether. But the Red Sea territory in- volves some difficulties. Italy's interests appeared to demand control of the coast up to Suakim, the most southerly littoral post occupied by Britain. This portion of the coast ceded to Italy, with it would go the trade back to Khartoum and the middle portion of the Nile valley. And with the trade it would be convenient to have the political control also. Italian rule here might be suppesed to interfere with British influence, which has nominally extended, though not in actua! fact, up the ertire val- ley of the Nile. Nodoubt the nature of the adjustment made will shortly appear, and will probably be such that, while strengthening Ttaly’s commercial and po- litical position, will secure to Britain, through Italy’s hold on Abyssinia, a more effective control of the Upper Nile and Central Africa.
