Apprenticeship paper with old documents
While there are a great many old documents of a legal and other nature still in existence. ouners of them apparently are not. always willing to make them public. However, there are exceptions.
In possession of s Charlotte- tmvn lady are documents which belonged to her grandmother more than a century ago and she has kindly made them avail- able to this paper for examin- annn and inclusion in
this of
special edition.
One of them is an ancient letter from St. John's Nfld.. to a Mrs. Ellen Brawders, of Charlottetown, confirming news she had received of the death of her husband. a seaman of the time.
It was from the agent of John Cusack and Sons in answer

it is available. It acknowledges her letter and states: "We re~ gret the pain of informing you that it is too true that your husband. James Brawders is dead. He was washed off the Jib Boom of the War Hawk t?) six days after leaving this port in February last. The vessel has not since returned to St. John‘s but. is expected in about a month. Should she bring the

Some years later Mrs. Braw- ders purchased from George Beer “for and in consideration of- the sum of seventy pounds of lawful money of Prince Ed- ward Island" part of Town lot number ninety two (92) in the fourth hundred of lots.
The property was described as “commencing at the north west corner of the said lot and running along Fitzroy Street for the distance of eighty four feet. thence running south east seventy feet, thence run- ning south west across the said lot eighty four feet and thence north west along Cum- berland Street seventy feet to the place of commencement."
The differences in spelling in various documents in those days is noticeable in t as the purchaser's name is several times spelled Broders.
The deed is signed by George Beer and M. A. Beer s wife) and witnessed by Robert Hyndman and Charles Des- Brisay.
Also noted on the document is the statement: “I certify that the within release was registered on the eighteenth day of January AD. 1868 at three o'clock PM. on oath of Charles Desbrisay Esquire——
