The Bank of Canada announces an issue of Don1i11io11 of Canada deposit certificates amount- ing to $57,100,000, dated Aug. 29, 1944, due Feb. 27, I945. has been sold to the chartered - banks at par. The certificates will bear inter- est at the rate of three-quarters of one per cent per annum. This is to replace a similar loan due last Tuesday.‘

(St. John Telegraph Journal) Twenty-Four years ago a general election was held in New Bruns- wick. like the general election this week, it was a three-cornered contest. The third party called it- self the United Farmers. A homc-| :1 grown movement, it blossomed inrv‘ rural sections of New Brunswick, had a brief existence, quickly fa- ded lrom the scene. -

It's interesting to compare what happened to the Uni Farmers back in i920 with what happened to the Co-operativc Common. wealth Federation Monday. In the‘ first place the U.F.. succeeded in: winning seven seats in the legis. lature, whereas the 0.0.11‘. took none.

In Carleton County the U.F. candidates headed the polls with 3.428 votes, 3,107 votes and 2,498 votes. The lowest man, with 2.498 was 250 ahead of his nearest old- llne o pone-ht. Monday. in Carle. ton, e Progressives got. 2,987 votes. 2.965 votes and 2.867 votes; three Liberals got 2,311 votes, 2,932 votes and 2.480 votes; and three C.C.F. candidates got 3113 votes, 349 votes and 345 voies— an insignificant fraction of the ballots cast.

Servicemen like to have pictures of their families i11 famil-iar home surroundings rather than against the formal studio background. Ev- ery branch of the Y. M. C. A, in base towns or even mobile canteens, is acting as a11 order office to supply such pictures. The men make their applications, which are forwarded to London headquarters. Then a corps of 1,500 amateur photographers goes into action. They are volunteers who joined this scheme and who, in their spare time, visit the homes of service- men to take snapshots. Even General Montgom- cry has taken advantage of tl1e plan. One of the amateur photographers visited his son's school and, at Montgomerys request, forward- ed the latest snapshot of the boy.
