There is certainly no fibre in irou ore, the most enthusias- tic criticaster will admit that, and none

then, does it come from’? We are told | by men who have given the subject aktention and are competent observers | that the fibre of iron, so-called,

Fainting.

Fainting is caused by an interruption | otf the supply of blood to the brain. The head should be lowered immediately. Often laying the person down will re- vive her without other measures. The head may be allowed to hang over the side of the conch for a few moments Smelling-salts may be held to the nose and heat applied over the heart to stimulate its action. Open a window or outer door to admit plenty of fresh air, and unfasten theclothing to permit free circulation. In severe cases when nn consciousness is prolonged, a mustard paste may be placed over the heart; if the breathing stops artificial respiration can be begun. It is useless to try to give stimulants by mouth unless the person is sufficiently conscious to be able to swallow. The attack ustally passes offin afew minutes, but the invalid shonld be made to lie still and be kept quiet for some time after it.

Ordinary glass is declared to be imper- meable to air and water, even under any kind of pressure. The boatmen on the lake of Como are in the habit of perform. ing an experiment for the amusement of visitors. An empty bottle, well corked and seajed, is let down into the water toa depth of 50 yards, and on being hanled up a short time afterward it is tound to con- tain nalanitel of water. By this you are led to the conclusion that glass must be porous. This, however, is not the cuse. Under the pressure of four atmospheres the pores of the cork and sealing wax be-

come impregnated, and the water filters through into the bottle. This can be easily proved by closing up the bottle

neck by melting it with a blowpipe. It may ther be immersed any length of time, and no wate: will find its way in. More- over, many persons think that some fluids can pas: through glass, because they have observea drops of liquid sometimes appear upon the outside of vessels, supposing that they must have passed through the glass, whereas in such cases théme drops are pre- cipitates of water from the atmosphere upon the cold glass in the manner of dew. It appears that porous glass has been pro- duced in Paris which is too fine to permit of draft, and yet the pores carse a pleas- antand healthy ventilation in a room.— Brooklyn Eagie.
