Among the Aenezes, according to Burckharit, the bridegroom simply kills « larab in front of his fxther-in- law's tent, and the ceremony, but for the running of the bride from one tent to another, is complete. Perhaps the purest symbolical act is that of the Transy!vanian Saxon bridal pair, who step over the threshold with their hands tied together. Some of these Transyl- vanian customs are remarkable and must be survivals from a very ancient period. The bridegroom never wears the shirt made for him by the bride ex- cept on his wedding day and at his burial, just as the veil of the Japanese bride becomes one day her shroud. - London Spectator.

Before the days of dentists, and when people generally believed in the value of charms, there were mysterious ways of preventing tooth- ache.

It is a horrible compound of alcoho), anise, coriander, fennel, worm- wood, indigo and sulphate of copper. It is strong, nasty and a moral and pbys- ical poison.
