We learn that six hundred tons of coal have been forwarded to Picton Landing for the use of the Dominion steamer Alert, which is now at Halifax. This indicates that the great exploring steamer will be placed on the route (with the Northern Light) between Georgetown and Pictou, though no official information has yet been received to that effect.

The late Premier, in response to a tele- rem asking for information with reference to his Irish Home Rule scheme replied as follows : :
‘From my public declarations at Edin- burgh, respecting the government of Ireland you willeasily see | have no further commu- nication to make.”
In the speech referred to by Gladstone, delivered Nov. 17:h, he said in effect, in reply to Parnell’s suggestion to give local self-government to Ireland, that when he learns, through the constitutional channel, what the wishes of Ireland are, he will give them his attentive consideration ; but that he cannot gain this knowledge until the ueW parliament meets.

Early this morning a young man and his wife. John and Sarah Magre, were arrested at Kensington in charge of having attempt- ed to procure money from the Princs of Wales by writing threatoning letters. They were taken into Court and formal charges preferred against them, and they were remanded to await examination.
The prisoners had written two letters making a demand for $750, and intimating in unmistakeable terms that unless the amount was forthcoming §the Princes’ life would be in jeopardy.

An Affronted Prince.
Maprip, Dee. 18.
The Queer Regent to-day refused an audiences to the Duke of Saville, cousin of thelate King. The Duke was thoroughly angry thereby and has publicly spoken in abuse ef-her. Ha boasts that Queen Christina will soon be forced to relinquish the regency, and the ex-Queen Isabella, will replace her. These declarations have caused a sensation in Madrid, and it is very probable the Duke will be prosecuted fer disloyal utterances.

A Great Flood.
WILKESBARRE, Pa., Des, 18. The water in the Susquehanna River at Nanticoke, broke through the workings of the Susquehanna Coal Company this morning. Twenty- four men employed in the Rock work of the slope are imprisoned in the apoer lifts by the rapid rising of the water. Several miners entered the slope with boats
and will use every means to reach them.

The Parneilites will support the motion, Gladstone will then take office, and introduce a bill granting home rule to [reland,”’
The correspondent of the Dublin Express telegraphs as follows:—“‘There is no longer any doubt that Gladstone has ap- proached members of the royal family re- garding the Irish reform, and is seeking to enlist the Prines of Wales’ help in removing obstacles thereto.”
Oa the other hand, enother despatch says: The Pall Mall Gazette having alleged that Earl Spencer had acyniesced, Karl Spencer telegraphs ‘no scheme of home rule has received my approval.’ Childers tele- graphs, he has no knowledge whatever of Gladstone’s alleged proposals. Sir Charles Diike says: It is premature to discuss the subject. Mr. Healy says he cannot ex- press his opinion on the subject before his party meets.
Later stili, Mr. Gladstone is reported to bave said: ‘° My reply in regard to the Standard’s statemen's applies also to those of Pall Mall Gazette and Daily News. Althongh those statements were unautho- rized, proposals may be conveniently can- vased. Only an Irish parliament will meet the case. Local councils, eto,, would be useless. The right to veto acts of the Irish ministry would be an illusion. I propose instead the exercise of sovereign power on the advance of a minister res- ponsible to the lomerial Parliamen?. The suggestion of an Prish Privy Council is un- worthy of attention. The Privy Courcil survives only as a relic, the substitute of a Cabinet. The questions of commerce and police are difficult ones, but with limitations i believe Home Rule may safely be granted, and that it wceuld tend to raise the character. of Irish members, Eari Granville being asked his opinion of report- ed ‘Home Rule scheme, said : ‘ Gladstene’s message in regard to the Standard’s alle- gation is svfticient. it is neediess for myself to say more.’ ”
It is further statei that a movement has been imavgurated, in Londen, which in- volves a scheme of revenge and prescription for the Irish. The movement, it is said, grew out of a meeting of the nations! lib- eral club of those liberal members elect wiose majorities have been reduced by the esting of the Irish vote for the tories and of those liberal candidates for parlia- mentary seats who were defeated by the sime tactics. Great bitterness against the Irish was displayed in all the speeches Many of the speakers said that their own Irish workmen on their farms and estates and in their mines and factories, whem they had provided with sustenance in troublous times, agitated and voted against their masters at the bidding of strangers. Other speakers declared that it was easily proven by statistics and by every man’s own observation that the chief employers of Irish labor in Great Britain were liberals. These were found all over the land, among the great mine owners and iron masters of the Black country, the great mill owners of Manchester and -Lanceater, the great mana- factures of Birmingham, the great shipping
merchants of Liverpool and London, and the great ship builders of the Ciyde and Tweed. These great
liberal proprivtoras had free'y employed Irish artiaans and laborers, and aco sd§ able proportion of the wages paid by ‘he liberal masters to the [rish had gone to strengthen the national league agitation. Therefore, the speakers declared, it would be suicidal folly and madness to continue to nourish such vipora in their bosoms. The result of the meeting was the adoption,by a unanimous vote, of a resolution pledging each gentleman present not to employ Irish labor in future, and to gradually, but as epeedily «s possible, discharge all Irish workmen now employed by them.
