Young Reddy, named after his father because he looked so much like him and Via so much like uni in other ways. was not yet a year old; but he was well grown and was out for himself in the Great World. He had already learn- ed much, but he still had much to learn. He never yet had been hunted by men and dogs. So it was that he was not much afraid of either. He kept at a distance from them but did not worry about them. All through the long summer he often had seen them, but they nev- er had paid any attention to him.

Now that the days were becom- ing shorter and colder. Young Red- dy wasntt finding it as easy to find plenty to eat as had been the case all summer. He had to hunt longer and farther. Now. he raced down the old wood road. he had no doubt that he could run iway from that Dog without any trouble. It was a most unpleasant surprise to him to find that he eouldn't.
