Boon To The Province

Welcome news for the whole Province was Premier Shaw’s an- nouncement yesterday of the decis- ion of the Fraser Valley Frosted Foods Company Limited to establish a. million dollar frozen food plant in the Montague area. to be built and equipped on a lease—purchase basis by the Provincial Government.

This British Columbia company is the largest of its kind in Canada, packaging some 17.000.000 pounds of food a year in its (‘hilliwack plant. Its operations here will include the freezing of both fishery and agricul- tural products. A 100-acre site has been made available by the town of Montague and the plant is expected to be in operation next August. and to be employing, within a few years, at least 200 persons.

The cabinet committee on resour- ces development, which has been at work on the negotiations, and all concerned in bringing this enterprise here, are to be warme commended. As we have said on many occasions, modern plants of this kind. and of the kind already in operation at New Arman fOr the processing of our basic products, are the key to Prince Edward Island’s future. It is many years now since this gospel was preached in the columns of this paper by the late Mr. H.K.S. Hem- ming. who unfortunately was too far in advance of his time to win the support of our political parties, but whose efforts are bearing fruit today.

The Shaw Government has shown itself keenly conscious of the possibilities in the food processing industry. Indeed, it has incurred criticism for having too rashly ven- tured into this field in certain in- stances. But this criticism, as we understand it. has been directed at its methods rather than at its aims. The objective itself is something that should appeal to all our people.

Whether the announcement of this undertaking should properly be timed for an election campaign is another matter. Certainly there Was no need of calling a snap election for this purpose. any more than there was for the purpose of paying hos- pital insurance premiums. There is reason in Opposition Leader Mathe- son's objections on this point, since neither issue was. in dispute and there was nothing to preVent the Government from implementing bothpolicies and carrying them on for another year.

However. the electors have no say in political decisions of this kind. The best they can hope for is that this new project will not be made a campaign football—either by the Government In exploiting it unduly as a vote catcher. or by its opponents in decrying It for that reason.

Geneva Prospects

The next test of what the future mfiy bring in the way of easing 'world tensions will come when the l7-mtlnn disarmament talks reopen . “Geneva on Monday. The talks were recessed on Sept; 8 in advance of the United Nations General As- sembly meeting in New York. However. there are other issues that may prove more negotiable. Apart from the hopes of getting a firm commitment on the banning of further nuclear tests, which the ['nited Nations has overwhelming- ly indorsed, there is the prospect of creating a zone free of nuclear wea- pons in Latin America. and perhaps even in Africa. This matter was touched upon by President Ken- nedy in his press conference last Tuesday. He also intimated that he is prepared to push for various types of nuclear weapons test controls.

Premier Khrushchev. on his part. has given various indications that he thinks the L'nitcd States-Soviet Confrontation ovcr t‘uba should now be made to yield some more perman- ent results for world peace. This may be just talk. but it is surely bet- ter to have, him talking this way than going into tantrums and calling names. He is having his own trou- bles with his (‘hincse fellow travel- let‘s. who have been throwing their weight around on the Indian border and making snide remarks about the kind of leadership he is giving to Soviet ('ommunism. He may find it Convenient now to be more co- operative with the West than he has been for a long time.

In paying tribute to the late Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, the editor of the Louisville (,‘ouricr-Journal recalls an incident which throws a revealing light on her tact under trying cir- cumstances. it was at a dinner meet- ing at Harvard. at which there was a good deal of informal discussion. Seated n ext to Mrs. Roosevelt, on her left, was a gentleman des- cribed by the writer as a “M r. Blank, a charter member of the hate Roose- velt clan."

He had allowed himst‘lf perhaps too many drinks before dinner, and his opening sallies, directed at the distinguished lady guest, were both crude and rude. The company was embarrassed at its inability to shush him up. But. Eleanor disposed of him in her own gracious manner.

She murmured something to Mr. Blank, turned to three others on her right and chuckled infectious- ly: “I am sorry—such an interest- ing young man on my left. but I’ve just had to explain to him that my left ear’s positiver no good. and I’ll simply have to talk with you."

Later in the evening she lost no admirers with her laughing admission, once Mr. Blank had re- tired. that “1 do have trouble some- times, you know, remembering which ear it is that's really poor!”

We are reminded of a very fine gentleman in this Province—— 8. clergyman, now deceased—who employed the same technique with bores, and others with whom he thought it a waste of time to dis- agree. We do not recall. however, that, that he was ever placed in the predicament from which Mrs. Roose- velt, so deftly removed herself on this occasion
