Seeret for lhoning Shirts.

A great secret in ironing shirts is to let them be perfectly dry before they are starched. When they are quite dry, rub them well into stiff cold water stavch, being particular as to its getting wellinto every fold of the linen; then wring them tightly by hand (the ma. chine wringer would get out too much of the starch); then either iron them at once or leave them for a couple of hours or so wrapped up in adampcloth. Do not dry them after the starch is put in before you iron them. If you wish an extra gloss, after they have been ironed rub the front, collars and cuffs lightly over with just moistened white castile soap and iron them all over again with the glossing iron. if you have one, or with an ordinary rather heavy iron, pressing it well on the ma- terial. It is this that gives the china- like polish observable on perfectly ‘‘got up” shirts.

For the cold water starch mixa table- spoonful of white starch with a little cold water, working it with the fingers to get it perfectly smooth and being very careful to remove any—even the slightest—grit. When this is quite smooth, stir into it enongh cold water to make up altogether a teacupfal of water and four Sonate of turpentine. Then dissolve a small half teaspoonful of borax in a very little boiling water and stir it all into the starch, stirring it also well before using it. If a larger quantity of starch is required, all the ingredients are increased in proportion excepting the turpentine, of which only two drops are added to each cupful of water after the first. But remember that the borax must in any case be thor ughly dissolved before the starch is used, or there is a chance of its dis- , coloring the lir 1en.

Don't Stuff a Cold.

A coid is a shock received by the my- riad nerves that bristle near the surface of a human body, This shock is transmitt- ed to the nerve centres, and then back to the mucous membranes, fercing a great amount of blood to the membranes, creating a more or less severe irritation and consequent rive in the temperature, followed by chills. Excess of food in the stomach still more increases the tempera- ture, and, worstof all, helps clog the se cretions or natural outlet of the body. It is high time we broke away from the old notion which, like eome cthers, has done more harm than good. For example, in years past how many poor fever sufferers, burning with an internal fire-and thirst, were hurried to an untimely grave because not allowed cooling drinks ora bit of ice hy the oldtime treatmenc for fevers, as fvolish as the adage for colds, At last one cunning delirious patient got to a pump of cold water and drank his fill; determined not to leave until the well ran dry, he slackrd his fever, recovered, ani doctors learned a leseon. Experimenting witha severe cold is a dangerous custom, as most persons try one remedy only until some fv.end suggests another “sure cure,” as Mark Twain so humorously describes. When slight hoarseness or tightening of the nasal membran-s warns one of a skiu exposure or chill from wet, act promptly; adelay is dangerous. With children it may mean croup and strangulation ; w.th adults, catarrh, bronchitiy, perhaps pneu- monia. If neglected, nothing can prevent the sneezing, red nose, and woe-begone look of a person with acold.
