Laurier and Mercier.

In the course of a recent speech Mr. Mercier spoke of his great services to the Leader of the Opposition and his strong claim upon the Liberal party. Mr. Mer- cier said :

“I was about te leave for Europe to con- tinue to work for my country, but I deferred the trip in order to lend a helping hand to my chief, Laurier. I thought it my duty to help with all my might a leader who had not a farthing and a party without a tarthing. I had too good a heart to abandon my friends in need and I placed all my resources at their disposition. I endorsed, with my friends, notes for a large amount, and my work, my devotion and my resources aided in convert ing a minority of 12 into a majority of 15.”

The Patriot that Laurier has nothing to do with Mercier. But Mr. Mercier is of a different opinion.

So it appears that Mr. Mercier is right and the Patriot wrong concerning Mr. intimate relatioa with the champion bood- ler of Canada.

Upon this point the Globe, of Toronto, says

“*While there is no evidence that any such sum was expended, the fact that Pacaud did supply funds for the election of Liberals io Quebec is not open to denial; nor is the fact that alarge portion of the money which Pacaud used was filched from the treasury of Quebec, But the attempt to connect Mr, Laurier with these infamous transactions is bound to fail, asit deserves to fail. It is not only that there is nota tittle of evidence that Mr. Laurier knew that money had been wrongly obtained or was being corruptly used in the elections, but the character and con- duct of the man give the lie to such an accusation.”

But, if Mr. Laurier did not when the genera! election campaign was in progress, know that the money which Mercier (by Pacaud’s hands) supplied for his election purposes was ‘‘ wrongly obtained,” (i. ¢ , stolen from the Treasury of Quebec) he knows the tact know ; and his only recourse, if he wishes to maintain his high character, is to give up the advantage which he gain- ed when Mercier converted 12 into a majority of 15,

Mr. P. B. Casgrain says :

Mr. Gladstone is enjoying vigoroug health. His son, Herbert Gladstone, says that he is in the habit of taking regular six mile walks and that this pedestrian exercise, seemingly ex- cessive for one of his advanced age, does not seem to tire him in the least.

The following explanation and correc- tion of the Patriot of lsat evening is inter- esting to show how easy it is to misjudge the judgment of a judga. The Patriot says :

The articles on ‘* Vross Examination,”’ by Lord Bramwell, and ‘* The accused as a witness,” are interesting, particularly to the lawyers, and the article on ‘* The traffic in sermons’ ought to be of mure thaa passing interest to the clergy. This number of the Nineteenth Century also contains a number of generzlly excellent articles in- cluding one on ‘* Cardinal! Manning in the Church of England,” and one on the In- fluenza and Salican.

Where it Comes From. Sir,—THe Examiner of Wednesday states that there is much ice in the Straits, and asks where it came from. I met Capt. Marchison of Point Prim, and ques- tioned him about it. He said:

Yes, there is a good deal of ice in the Straits It comes from the west. There are some large clumpets in it. I suppose

they were formed from the packing of floe ice.”

This statement that the ice comes from the west is interesting It proves the ex- istence of the current flowing from west to east through the Straits of Northumber- land. The ice, no duub*, was formed in the western and northwestern parts of the Gulf, where the temperature ia January, is 10 degrees lower than it is here, and was brought down to us by the west winds and the Magdalen currents.

The actual surplus for the year is $19,000. The amount which has been spend on the new parliament build- ing is $830,000.
