The Bicycle Race.

Tue bicycle races in Summerside on Sat- urday were only a partial success. The rain and wind prevented a number of people from attending, and made it un- pleasant for those who did; as well as inter- fering seriously with the speed of the sev- ral races.

Shortly after 3 o'clock the one mile race was called. The boys went off from a nounted standstill, headed by Roberts who he'd the lead throughout and won. He was followed closely by Young who made a good second—time 3.55.

The coasting race came next and was also

| taken by Roberts.

Then followed the single pedal and slow races, both of which were taken by Young.

There were three entries in the five mile race, Mason, Roberts and Davies. (New- som failed to appear.) Mason led from the start, but was pushed very closely by Roberts for about three or three and a half miles, when Mason gradually pulled away from him and crossed the line in 21 minutes. The time was pronounced goud, considering the strong wind.

The horse against biepcle race was not called, the wind being too strong for bicy- cles to have any chance at all to win.

The exact position of the wheat crop of the Northwest cannot be easily learned. The reports are still very conflicting. There 1s no reasonable doubt that in some logali- ties damage has been done by frost and the continued cold weather makes it probable more injury will yet be inflicted. There is dso reason to believe that the reports as to the extent of the injury are greatly exag- gerated, “and that a large portion of the crop will be saved in good condition. It is certain in any event that with the higher prices and larger area farmers will receive more for their crops than last year.

New Orteans, Sept. 8.

A special despatch from Jacksonville says the situation looks alarming. Up to 10 o'clock yesterday 24 new cases and one death were reported and the list kept grow- ing all the forenoon. The panic feeling 1s growing heavily. The situation is growing worse hourly, and something must be done at once, if the town, and children here are to be protected. Answers to appeals are coming in yenerously, for which the citizens of Jacksonville feel deeply grateful.

The new cases are 49, deaths 7. The total cases to date are 604, total deaths to date 75.

Farmers arriving in town from all parts of the country report that the heavy frost of the past few nights has done great dam- age to the crops, particularly the buck- wheat crops. Squash, cucumber, beans and other garden stuffs have also been killed. In some places whole fields of buckwheat have been entirely destroyed, Throughout Carleton County the bean crop is said to be entirely destroyed; oats, buckwheat, Indian corn and wheat are much injured,

Telegraph Poles.

Srr,— There is a growing habit of adver- tising pills and plasters, et omne genus, upon the city telegraph poles. Already, as un- sightiy as the law ailows, it is too bad to make these street masts doubly conspicious with patches of colored advertising. No one stops to read them and they are as futile for custom as if tacked on the top of the posts. While the poles are uniform in weather stains, one can learn to tolerate them (though fronting a parlor window) but when those ‘ Joveph’s Coat” adver- tisements are promiscuvusly added, one gets disgusted with the city grandfathers, that a prohibition ordinance is not resorted to, aud the nasty exhibition stamped out.
