Last year members of the Mess received almost as much fun as may watciied the wide-eyed stares an smiles of happiness. And after the party was over it was not strange that the kiddies haa mile. interest in eating supper.

OTTAWA. Nov. 28 - (OP) Profits and manufacturing costs of consumer goods will be studied by parliament's special committee on retail price-fixing. Combines com- missioner T. D. MacDonald will as- sist.

The investigation was decided on today after some members ex- pressed skepticism when an elect- rical equipment manufacturer. during cross-examination, stated he did not know what it cost him to manufacture his goods.

J. R. Longstaff. president of Ren- frew Electric and Refrigerator Co., Rcnfrew. 0nt.. said many factors went into compilation of costs. I-I:- ltad been in business many years. but he still did not know what 115 costs were.

George Hees (PC Toronto Broadview), also a manufacturer questioned the statement. He he- l.eved manufacturers knew what their costs were. even on a dav-to- riay basis.

A. Wesley Stuart (L Char- 'niIe) said the committee would be lusting its time if it did not in- restlgate manufacturers' costs and .-ould show the people why certain margins of profit were necessary.

Napier Simpson of Toronto, reneral manager of the Canadian Electrical Manufacture-rs' oc- iatlon. agreed to work with tho committee to detail manufacturers' mark-ups. on the understanding that only figures would be made public names of manufacturers would be kept confidential. This would prevent competitors learning of each other's trade secrets.

Potato Prices Ia Remain Steady

Local retail prices remain steady at around 33.00 per 75 lb. bag, with the growers receiving 32.40-32.50. and there has been no sudden in- crease ovcr the past week, it was learned yesterday from potato marketing officials and retailers. A Canadian Press despatch from Halifax yesterday reported that retail prices in that city had jump- ed 50 cents for a 75 lb. bag since last Thursday. with Number one Prince Edward Island potatoes selling for 33.89 to 84.00 retail and predicted that the price would reach 35.00. in comparison with last year's price for the same prod- uct of sl.l0 to 31.29.

Mr. J. William MacKlnnon, who recently resigned the Deputy Provincial Secretary. was the guest of honour at a meeting of the Caledonia Club held at the home of Chief Wendell Benton. Grafton Street, last night on the eve of his departure for Ottawa.

Twelve members of the Club were present .when rreaident W. E. Shaw presented Mr. MacKlnnon with a suitably inscribed electric clock and an illuminated address.
