During the freight rates debate in Parlia- ment, and again before the Railway Committee, it was revealed by Mr. H. H. Hafield (Victoria-Corie ton) that Maritime potato shippers have been mulcted right and left an freight rates since July of last year. Since that time, he said, when haulihg a carload of produce from Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island through to Detroit, the C. N. R. charged an extra l0 per cent on the whole run.' “Before the United States Inter- etete Commerce Commission authorized that in- crease," he told the House, "the railways of Canada were bllowed to increase their freight rates, on the mileage haul over Canadian terri- tory, by I0 per cent from July on, and by 20 per cent from October on. It costs $207 to carry a carload of potatoes from New Brunswick to Wind- sor, Ontario; and it casts $378 to carry it to De-

Transport Minister Chevrier, in reply, said

more. Mr. Hatfield: "Your Board allowed this in- crease before the Interstate Commerce Commis- sion ever allowed it or ever gave authorization. The Interstate Commerce Commission did not give any authority to increasd freight rates in the United States until October. but your Board al- lawjd the Canadian railroads to make an increase in uly."

Hon. Mr. Chevrier made no reply to this charge. So Mr. Hatfield has taken it up again. He lies repeated it before the Railway Committee, with apparently the some result. This is an ex- traardinary situation indeed, and one which should be investigated. If Mr. Hatfield is right, itwould seem that the Transport Commission is either incompetent or hopelessly prejudiced in favor of the railways and the Central Provinces, where freight hauls are shorter and competitive rates must always prevail.

Should Newfoundland decide to join Can- ada, she will have seven members in the House of Commons and six Senators. Moreover, she will abl in financial terms which are allegedly much mo e generous than those offered the Maritime Provinces under the Ottawa tax agreements.
