Wily Winnie had broken out of the asylum-to which she was committed in 1933 after killing two girl lriends and shipping their dismembered bodies to Los Angeles in a trunk-with the use of a 48-foot rope made from clothing which she used to lower herself to the ground from the window of a third-storey tow- er. Although no reason was given for her surrender, it is l1CllOV('(l that she was tired of being hound- ed.
