Hi. B. C. Bats.—-Between sixty and teventy couples attended the ball given by the Hillsborouch Boating Club at their rooma jast evening. The committee of management had been hard at work for ‘ome time making arrangements, and their eiitts were justly appreciated by the large Mumber present. The dancing hall was handsomely cecorated, and reflected credit om thoxe in charge. Shortly after eight v clock dancing commenced, and was in- Culged in until about midnight, when an ex- cellent supper was served. D C. Chalmers, cashier of the Bink of Nova Scotia, said the Mexican doubloos wasararecoin. He had no recollection of ever seeing one before. He thought the coinage of the doubloon had ceased in 1848.

Dersey Stauley, who said he would be 21 years of age next May, said he Was xc: quainted with beth prisuners. He did not see Taylor on the 15:h Merch. He had been in his company two or three times since then—was with him the morning Smith was arrested. Walked with him from my house to Thorne, the barber's. Both went in. He said nothing about money while on the way to the shop or after they went in.. This was at nine in the morning. Did not see him since that date. About a week before Smith’s arrest witness was in Thorne’s barber shop. Geo. Ferguson, Taylor and an. Italian peddler were there. ‘laylor bought something from | the lialtan—~about 35 cents worth in all, Witness saw Taylor take a small parcel of , paper money out of his pocket on that oc- | casion, but he did not open it up. Ha | thought there might be two or three notes! in the parcel. Witness also saw a gild piece with Taylor then. it was a $5 gold piece with a Queen’s head on it. Taylor asked witness to get the coin changed for | him, and he went dewn to Carter’s store to get it changed. The clerk said she thoaght the coin was worth 8, but did not change’ it. Witness then tock the coin back and | gave it to Taylor. Taylor and witness then went down to Angus Macdonald’s. Taylor suid his mother had given him some money to get clethes. He said he could not spend all the gold money as he was to get a pair of pants withit. die saw only one piece of gold and thé bills with him. Maedonala changed the gold piece, keeping 25 cents ior his trouble. Both took whiskey in Macdonald’s—Taylor treating. Doth then went to Foran’s when Taylor began bargain- . ing for a suit of clothes. Witness and | Taylor then went to Thorne’s barber shoy, where they were joined by Thorn, and the three went to Large’s where Tay- | lor treated them to dinner, costing about | 75 cents. Witneas then went home. He never saw Tayior withany other money ; and was never with him at any other time when he spent money. |

George Ferguson, a barber at. Thorne’s testified to seeing the prisoner, Taylor, two or three times between the ldth and ist March. He treated Thorne and witness once at Capt. Msy’s between those dates. He paid for the treat with a $1 bid. Witness also saw Taylor with somo money in the barber shop on Saturday morning, the 2ist March. He had the doubloon with him. Taylor asked him to go out and see what it was worth, but he did not do so, telling Taylor he had better go himself. Witness ssid he got the coin at home,—that it had beenin a drawer at home for a good while and he had taken it vut to see what it was worth. He asked Smith to go out and get it changed and he went, Taylor had another gold coin with him then, which they called a $5 gold piece.

Isaiah Houston saw the prisoners, Taylor and Connolly, on Saturday morning, 2ist March, between 9 and 10 o’clock. Also saw the prisoners together about dinner time the same day. They were on the railway track going out towards St. Peter's Road crossing. Saw Policeman Bradley at the same time. He told witness he was after them. Saw them again about five o'clock. ‘They came in the ruad, and we at out the track again. On the Sunday fol- lowing witness saw both of them go into James Taylor's.

Marshai Cameron said that he searched Taylor’s chest in his bedroom and found seven keys there two of which will open the lock remvved from Mr. White’s door by Mr. Harper. The prisoner Connolly was arrested on Monday, the 23cd.

Angus Micdonald said he knew the pris- oner Taylor. He and another young man came to witness’ place on Wedues- day or Thursday of the week before last, and asked for two glasses of beer. He tendered witness a $5 American gold piece with a hole in it, in payment. Wit ness chenged the movey, deducting 25 cents for the hole. Afterwards saw Taylor with anther goll coin—either Spanish cr Mexican. The coin can be traced. Witness paid the coin over to Perkins & Sterns in pay-

ment of a bill—they deducting 25 cents dis-

count. ee Williem Harper, Wiiliam McPherson, James Houston, Policeman Campbell and

Sergeant Bradley were also examined, but their evidence was not important.

The further hearing of the case was then ad journed until this afternoon,
