On Friday last the horse of Mr. John Jay took fright and ran away, on Pisquid River. Mr. Jay was thrown from the sleigh. When picked up he was insensible, and remained so for the greater portion of are but has since recovered consider- ably.

When Von Moltke was a traveller in Turkey, the plague raged in Constantinople. So great was the horror of infection that very few would give aid or comfort to the sick or dead. The Prussian officer excepts a Catholic priest, who not only did his own duties in the hospital, but waited on the sick as a nurse, attended and dressed them, and buried those who died. Testimonies are ever cropping up of the heroic devotion of the priestheod—devotion surpassing, as Moltke says, the courage of the soldier in

She accomplished 3,000 miles in the same number of quarter hours, and at the conclusion was in remark- ably good spirits, and her last quarter was the fastest of the whole walk; she made it in 1:59}. It was extraordinary, too, that, after walking a whole month, she had only lost a pound and a_ half—weighing, when she began, 100 pounds, and when she stopped, 98}.

the solicitors for work bring their wives

; and children with them. In nine cases out of ten.these people have left America with- out. ascertaining whether Paris is a fer- tile field for employment or not, and they are, besides, totally unacquainted with the language and the business methcds of the country. How any one can expect to bet- ter his condition by quitting his own land and coming to one with whose language and customs he is wholly unfamiliar, it is diffi- eult to imagine. And yet we do not exag- rate when we say that these instances are

A deputation of Conservative M. P’s waited on the Finance Minister yesterday to ask that a duty of 75 cents per ton should be imposed on coal, and the deputa- tion asked for a duty of 625 per ton on marble.

The House “sat with closed doors for a few minutes yesterday.

It is stated that objectien was taken to the quality of stationery supplied to mem- bers, and that it was decided to advertise for tenders in the future

A deputation, consisting of Dr. Coleman and Messrs Gray and others, of Seaforth ; Mr. Kidd, of Dublin, and Mr. Platt, of Goderich, waited on the Finance Minister, yesterday, with regard to the duty on salt.

In the Senate an interesting debate arose on Hon. Mr. Read’s motion for papers re- specting the Georgian Bay branch of the/ Canada Pacific Railroad. The mover con- tended that the country was pledged to an expenditure of $25,000,000 for this work, and that it would be of little practical ability.

The men-of-war ‘‘ Boadicea” and ‘‘Flora” are at Simons Bay. They have twenty- seven cases of small-pox on board.

Lonpon, Feb. 8. Ascending and descending cages on Vic- toria coal pit, near Wakefield, collided this morning ascending, rope broke, and the cage was precipitated a distance of 102 yards, killing eight persons.

Sir,—As Mr. Carvell is now investigat- ing certain charges against suberdinate rail- way employees, perhaps he would be will- ing to do something of that kind for the

chief sinner—Mr. Superintendent Mc- Kechnie. In 1875 and 1876, when I was there, it was well known that Mr. Mc-

Kechnie drew twenty dollars per month for the use of his team, equal to two hundred and forty dollars per year, such team being attended, cared for, and driven by Jimmy Morgan, who was himself paid thirty dol- lars per month by the Government, for being household porter, gardiner, and man-

of-all-work to Mr. McKechnie; and that to get tlhe money’ without its being known, the Superintendent

requiredt the Express Manager and Jimmy to render accounts in their own names for ‘‘horse hire.” When they received the money, it was immediately paid over to their master, the Superintendent. It was also whispered at the time that Mr. Mc- Kechnie supplied his house with coal, oil and ice from the Railway, free of cost to himself, and that he regularly charged thirty dollars per month travelling expenses, when the actual outlay was not ten.

The ‘‘ hands” believed that in this gen- eral game of grab, Mr. Superintendent Mc- Kechnie thus increased his salary twenty- five to thirty per cent., and that his brother did the same. Should not the truth concerning these statements be dug out? In the course of such an investigation, the Inspector might be able to find out how much Mr. McKechnie paid for that commo- dious piece of furniture, the property of the Government, which was taken from the attic of the Station to his own dwelling.

Str,—Is it not really time some action was taken by the city authorities to remedy the frequent slippery condition of the sidewalks on some of our principal streets?

It is absolutely unsafe for a young person to attempt to walk with apy degree of comfort or security; and for an old one, the danger is very much greater.

Either people should be compelled to keep the space controlled by each in a fit condition to enable the public to walk with safety, or, failing in this, the Council should get it done speedily.

A little ashes scattered on the slippery places would be a vast improvement, and greatly appreciated by those who have busi- ness to do up-town.
