SOME OPINIONS FROM PRINCE EDWARD Is- LAND-—-THE PROTECTIVE TARIFF WORKS WELL—IMPROVED CONDITION OF FARMERS SINCE 1878.

The Ottawa correspondent ef the Toronto Mail says: It is said by leading Grit papers in the West that Prince Edward Isiand is deadly opposed to the National Policy. Here is a speciman of what the

The duty on flour has not raised the price here, as the price is governed by the Euro- pean market. greatly benefitted by a reciprocity treaty with the United States, especially in their market for potatoes, but the present tariff, or & more stringent one, appears to be the only means of obtaining such. The cost of farm implements of all kinds is rauch cheaper, and hardware is lower and better under the present tariff. The general con- dition of the country is improved here since 1878, and is still improving. I believe the National Policy is a step in the right di. rection. On all foreign products, except- ing those.of which we have not a sufficient quantity to supply the demand, the duty: ought to be almost if not quite prohibitery,

the interest of agriculturists here to admit American farm produce free. Farm im- plements, since the tariff was established, are cheaper and better, including mowing machines, rakes, barrows, seeders, and smaller tools. There is no denying this. All woollens and cotton goods are cheaper under the present tariff, notably tweeds, winceys and worsteds. The homes market for all kinds of-produce has been improved, first by the dnty on foreign products, and second by the enccuragement of manufac- tures and the employment of more men at! higher wages. The general condition ef farmers and the laboring classes bas im- proved since 1878.

Mr. Archibald Shaw, farmer, of New Perth, King’s county, writes :—The price of wool was inereased under the present tariff, while woollens, cottons, and hard- ware in common use amongst farmers have not increased in price, but rather the opposite. Farm lands have increased in value, and the general condition of farmers and the laboring classes has improved since 1878. It would not be in the interest of farmers to admit American farm produce free, unless it might be seed grains. Onur flour has been cheaper since the introdue-. tion of the Nationa) Policy. The price of pork has increased, and the farmer can sell to better advantage.
