Such had been the previous life of the Polish patriot, glorious though persecuted. His hack lurk had be- come proverbial, as it was enough for Zaionezck to appear in the ﬁeld to be wounded, and he could count the battles he was engaged in by his scars.

But to return. Zaionczck placed himself at the head of his hundred chasseurs, and ndVanccd towards the road to ltharnanick. Scarcely had he advanced a league, when be per. ccived a body of nearly ﬁve hundred Momelukes. Zaionezek charged them. and they instantly dispersed.
