“The only thing in my mind was to get the batters out,’’ he said. “And I had good luck in getting them. I made them hit pitches that I wanted them to hit. My fast ball was my best pitch today.
“No, I never get riled out there. I think my toughest spot in the series came in the 8th in- ming of the second game when they got three hits in a row off me. But I, got out of it and all my confidence returned. That confidence stuck with me all the way.
“I think I worked harder in this last game than any of the others, I had to put more effort into it — got away with fewer pitches the other times.”

THE RAGS-TO-RICHES story was concluded yesterday efter- ——goorr- om the playing surface of Chicago's Comiskey Park.
The ‘poor’ Los Angeles Dodgers who floundered around next. - door to the basement in the National League in 1958 were crowned champions of the baseball world before some 48.000 loyal White Sox fans who had come to the bal! park to see their ‘darlings’ force a seventh and deciding issue.
Their inability to do just that meant the end of the line for Al Lopez and company and gave Walter Alston and his Dodgers the most coveted prize that baseball can offer.
WALTER ALSTON didn’t have to win the world series to win the acclaim of baseball experts everywhere. Any man that can tee practically the same outfit that could do nothing right in 1953 and make them National League champions in 1959 richly deserves the manager-of-the-vear award. That's exactly what Al- s‘on cid and while this was taking place the rest of the senior circuit looked on in amazement. After this prize was won. the world series was next on the list and again the experts said the Dodgers couldn't beat the White Sox. But after all. the experts never gave Alston a chance to make the world series so why should their opinion bother him at this stage of the proceedings.
BADLY BATTERED by the Pale Hose fn that opener on October 1, the Dodgers came bouncing off the floor to win the next three contests and take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best- of-seven series. They had every intention of closing things out in that fifth game but a great strategist by the name of Lopez delaved the crowning ceremonies until yesterday.
This same Lopez did his darndest to further delav the con- elusion of this 1959 world series but the Dodgers had other ideas and they were not be denied.
And so despite the fact that the great righthander Early Wynn strode out to that mound yesterday afternoon, the Alstonites re fused to be scared.
They had come too far to miss out and if they faliered vester- day. there was no telling what might happen in a seventh battle So this sixth game was considered a ‘must’ by the Los Angeles crew and they packed it away before the partisan Chicago fans
JOHNNY PODRES didn’t get the satisfaction of registering win number 2 in the 1959 world series. With an 8-9 lead. it seem- ed certain that Johnny would go the distance but Walter Alston was taking no chances.
When Podres hit Landis with one out in onfye tt seemed te throw him off balanee. He then proceeded to w Sherm Lollar and next served up a home run ball to big Ted Kluszewski. With the score reading 83 Podres walked Al Smith and Alston thought it was time to stop the fooling. He called in young Larry led only four hits the rest of the way and kept from scoring. We mentioned before in this column the important assignments that were his and the great manner in which he carried them out. ’
The 1959 world series will aways bring to mind the-name of Larry Sherry, one of the greatest competitors the game has seen for quite some time.

FOR ALSTON it surely must have been his greatest satis faction. Sure he won the 1955 world crown but that time he was expected to at least be in the world series. Four vears later he finds his team in the classic fighting Chicago White Sox for baseball supremacy and most folks were wondering how he ever got there. Miilwaukee Braves and San Francisco Giants are still dumbfounded at the turn of events in the last ten days of the regular season.
