Sm ;—Having noticed for some months back a consi- derable space ofyour columns taken up with a ﬂamingad- vertisement of William Douse’s, Esq., Land Agent for thei Earl of Selkirk, setting forth the advantages which he offers to Immigrants arriving in this country, I beg leave, for the iii- formation of your readers, to state the conditions of a lease which now lies before me, and which was lately given by the gentleman just alluded to, to what appears to be a very decent, respectable person of this description. The quantity of land leased is 75 acres, and, is situated in one of the most inconvenient localities in the whole Island, being in the very interior of the country, about three miles back of the Murray Harbour road—on what is to be handed down_to posterity under the designation of Douse’s Settlement. The lease is for twenty one years, and bears date the 22d Sept. 1840. After stating that all the Pine Timber on the land is reserved, it goes on to say that the lessee has to pay the year- ly rent of two pounds per annum, for the ﬁrst three years, and of ﬁve pounds for the residue of the term—the ﬁrst pay-

land in this Island, and that 1 can hardly bring myself to believe that terms so harsh, so cruel, and so directly calcula- ted to rob a poor man of the fruit of his toil and labour, were ever prescribed by his Lordship or his Trustees.
