The Romans were very superstitious |
about marryingin May and February. The 14th has always

there iv a full moon and a flowing tide. | in Scotland the last day of the year is considered lucky ; the bride’s prospects in life are supposed to be brilliant. Sunday is a great favorite with brides in some parts of England and Ireland. The French demoiselle, however,thinks the first Friday ia every month particu- larly fortunate for her nuptials. Io Sweden the bride on her way back from church has pieces of bread inher pockets, These she throws away on the road to her home to insure her good luck. It is ill-fortune to the one who picks up these crumbs. If the bride lose her slipper on ber way from church she will lose her troubles, and the one who picks it up gain riches. In every |; country itis an unhappy omen for the wedding day to be put off when once the day has been fixed, and in England it is believed that great misfortunes will ensue if the bridegroom stand, it only for a moment, at the junction of

bad luck if the bride fails to shed tears on her wedding day, or if she turns back to take a last look at herself in her wedding toilet. Among the English
lasses it is bad luck for a bride to look back or go back when once she has started for the church, or to marry
dressed in green, or to let the ceremony go on while there is an open grave in the churchyard. When the brides- maids undress the bride, they must be sure to throw away all the pins,to make sure of good luck to themselves as well asfor her. Ifasingle pin be left in the bride’s raiment, woe unte her. And ifa bridesmaid should keep one of them, she will not be married before Whitsuntide or the Easter following. Therefore bridesmaids in England are not given to preserving the pins from the bridal costume. If the bridal party venture off the land they must go up stream, and the bride to make certain of good luck, must cn the” happy day | wear “Something old and something

Ordinarily, go to your own church prayer meeting in pre- ference to special services elsewhere. Ordinarily, contribute support to the charity you have hitherto eurported. Broaden the field of your Christian effort all you can; but respect the previous leases. Whatsoever new Christian work your hands find to do, do it with your might, but not at the expense of Christian effort in which you are already profitably engaged,— SS. Times.

“There are two brothers,” says the Atlanta (Ga.) Constitution, “who live in Atlanta whose residences are opposite one another on the same street. One decided a day on twe ago to have his house painted, and closed a contract with a painter, who was to do the work last Saturday, and ashe was anxious to be paid for the job that night, the gentleman agreed to accom- modate him. The painter with a large force went to work with zeal, and shortly after-noon notified the gentleman at his plaee of business that the work was done. He was promptly paid, and the gentleman soon went out to see his newly decorated house. Imagine his consternation on arriving on the ground to find his house untouched, whiie that of his brother, just across the way, shone like a new cireus poster, with its
