Sir,— In his attempts to substantiate his charge of} immorality against the Examiner, the Rev. George Suther- | jand states, that St. Paul apologized for having called | Ananias a “ whited wall;” and advises the Examiner to pursue a similar course in reference to the Islander. Now: in this he has either been guilty of a wilful misconstruction of Scripture, or he has displayed an amount of ignorance | which would be deplorable in the most obscure member of his congregation, St. Paul did not apologize for having called the man a “whited wall,” but he apologized. for | having “ reviled” the high priest. His reply was, “ I wist, not, brethren, that he was the high priest,” &c., from which we infer that had he mot been the high priest, Paul would | not have apologized. Let any of the reverend gentleman’s | congregation, who is not altogether blinded with partiality, | take his Bible and read the passage; and he must admit! that bis religious guide tias sadly committed himself. He further states, in effect, (I have not the Protecfor at hand), that Paul, ander the influence of divine inspiration, was justified in using epithets which would be “ abusive” and ++ jmmoral,”’ emanating from us, since we are not divinely inspired ! Strange, indeed, if it be considered sin in us to shape our speech and conduct in accordance with those of inspired writers, where they spoke and acted under the in- fluence of divine inspiration. Sirange that God would grant a particular license to inspired writers to use expressions which, coming from others, would be “ abusive” and “ im- moral’—-that he should give a moral law to guide the conduct of a part of mankind, from which he would exempt a certain class on account of their superior sanctity! Mr. Sutherland argues, that to call any man what he is not,.in a strict literal sense,is immoral.. Now Paul's being inspired did not. make Ananias a ‘‘ whited wall,” in a purely literal seuse; then (to use Mr. Sutherland's argument), ‘* however iow Ananias may have sunk he was a human being”— whether Paul was inspired or not—‘‘and hence to call him u ‘whited wall’ was immoral.” I knew a very popular clergyman of the Tree Chureh who was in the habit of calling any individual in his congregation, whom he would

I was one day listening to another olergyman of the same Church—who is at present a bosom friend of Mr. Suther- Jand’s—on his having enunciated a doctrine which, from the faces of some of bis hcarers, he saw was not well appreciated, he made the fo'lowing remarks :—* This is a bone that is tuo hard for the dogs of Satan to graw.”

He states that Paul spoke to Ananias, under the influence of divine inspiration, and yet he commends him for having (under the same influ- ence, [ presume) apologized and retracted, for he recommends a similar course to the Examiner. He might just as well have stated that God prompted Paul to use an expression which, on account of its offensive nature, he caused him afier- warde to retract! This is pure blasphemy. It is not the first instance, however, in which an editor of the Protector has becn guilty of thiserime.. Now, on the grounds afforded me, here I undertake to sustain a charge of Gross IGNORANCE AND BLASPHEMY aGarnst THE Rev. Gronce Surwervanp, and I challenge and defu him to clear himself of it!!

Let us now apply this rule-to a ease in which he himself is more immediately interested, The readers of the Presbyterian Witness will doubtless recollect the Harvey ease that excited so much interest amongst the Presbyterians of Nova Scotia a few years ago.- The Free Ghurch had, by a course of the most wicked and unprincipled intriguing on the part of some of its members, suceeeded in'worming it- self into the possession of a church built by a congregation of the Secession Church. This gave rise to a violent and prolonged discussion between the two parties in their common organ, the Presbyterian Witness—the Rev. George Suther- land acting as the champion of the Free Kirk, and the Rev. Kbenezer Ross advocating the cause of the Secession Church. ‘Their communications were of such a nature as to preclude entirely the possibility of their being Loth good Christiaus, or even men of any soundness of morals. Fortunately, how- ever, the badness of the cause that Mr. Sutherland advo- eated —the unsoundness of his arguments, and our present knowledge of his character, afford us satisfactory proof that he was in error; and it may be gratifying to Mr. Ross,

LATE AND IMPORTANT NEWS FROM ENGLAND AND INDIA.

By a telegraphic message to the Pictou Eastern Chromile,

received here on Saturday last, we have been put in possession

of the following important news. The news was received in

Pictou on Wednesday evening, the 25th instant.

The Steamer Vanderbilt, from Liverpool for New York, was intercepted off Cape Race at 3 p.m., on Monday the 23d inst. Her dates are to the 14th inst.

The despondent condition of money matters in England on

the departure of the Aélantic, resulted on the following day |

in @ fearfe] panie—all the Banks refusing discounts in any shape. In the afternoon, however, there appeared, most op- portunely, the Treasury Letter, suspending the Bank Charter Act, and wuthorising the issue of Notes to any amount on approved securities. The effect was instantaneous, and the panic ceased as if by magic. At Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and other important cities, the news was received with furious acclamations—Cotton and all kinds of produce being at once enbanced in price. INDIA.

The nows of the occupation of Delhi by the British forces is confirmed. The King has been captured and his two sons killed.

The British forces have suffered immense Joss.

General Nichoison is dead.

Lucknow had been relieved by Havelock. General Neill and several British officers are killed.

The mutineers from Delhi were pursued by the British troops.

The communicatior$ between Cawnpore and Lucknow are still intercepted.

The Bank of France has raised its rate of discount to eight per cent. on Bills under 30 days, nine per cent. on sixty days, and ten per cent. on ninety days.

In Scotland there was a great money panic and run upon the banks.

TREASURY WARRANTS.

Teacugks of the public schools will be rejoiced to learn that the Warrants hereafter to be issued in payment of their sala- , ries will be responded to in cash at the Treasury on presenta- tion. This will afford much relief and save considerable loss

and annoyance to one of the most useful class of the public /servants, while we are confident it will have the effect of'| making the sale of Warrants generally more easy than it has

| . | been for some months past, and less profitable to the money- 3

‘jobbers. We trust the, day is not far distant when Treasury

| Warrants will again be in demand, as much so as they were for four or five years previous to the late summer; but before we can hope for the return of such a state of things, the Le- | gislature must have the courage to alter the system of collect- | ing the revenue, in spite of all local and private considerations, by restricting the long credit on Impost bonds, and charging them all alike, from the day of their issue, with the same rate of interest as the Government is bound to pay on its own

securities. In addition to this alteration, let the interest on | Warrants be increased to six per cent., and the shaving |

operation, so far as Government paper is concerned, will soon

go out of practice. ? - a

Ir is stated that the P. E. Island Bank has, during the past week or ten days, discounted paper more generally than it has | for several months past, but at an increased rate of interest— 9 instead of 7§ per cent., the previous rate. This would

|appear high in ordinary seasons, but it is not out of the way

direction by some of the oldest and staunchest Banks in Earope ,and America. So painfully is the general commercial de-

pression felt even in this Island, where commercial transactions

/are confident, will haye no reason to complain of a scarcity |of paper presented for discount, owing to the increased rate

of interest. A judicious exercise of the power with which | that institution is invested will serve to dissipate much gloom _in our small mercantile circle, while there is every reason to | hope that considerable profit and no material loss will accrue

By private advices from New Brunswick we learn, with regret, that the failure of the Borough Bank of Liverpool has had a véty disastrous effect upon the hitherto depressed state of business—several parties of previously undoubted stability having been heavy losers, either immediately by the stoppage of the Bank, or indirectly by their correspondents being com- pelled by that event to stop payments. It appears very clearly that British North America is undergoing a financial pressure of unparalelled scarcity, caused primarily by the ab- sorption of money in the railway speculations of the United States, rendering it impossible to remit to Britain in payment of the heavy balances due to the latter. We trust that the recently authorized issue by the Bank of England of small notes may have the effect it is intended to have, but we cannot but think the remedy is inadequate to the disease.

| Juvente Concerrs.—It was our pleasure to attend two hConcerte, given by Mr. Patrick Bowers and a choir of sume twenty young ladies and children under his tuition, on Mon- day and Tuesday evenings last, in St. Dunstan’s School-room. A glance at the programmes, on the occasions alluded to, is all ‘that is needed to give an idea of the excellent judgment dis- | played-by Mr. Bowers in the selection of his pieces. Of the young ladies, it is but just to say that their execution of the pieces allotted to them individually and collectively is desery- ‘ing of more than praise. Some of the pieces, indeed, were executed with all the taste and precision which could be ex- pected from finished artists. We were especially pleased with the manner in which * Lilly Willy Woken,’’ ** Nelly Gray,” and that sweetest of songs, ‘‘Annie Laurie,’’ were rendered.
