Two Drowned in N. S. Lake

Calgary Publisher Dies Suddenly

CALGARY (CF) - John David Souiham. 45. publisher of the Cal- gary Herald, died suddenly here Sunday night.

Wcil-known in publishing. mili- tary and sports circles. he had been publisher of the Calgary daily since 1946.

Born in Ottawa. April l2. 1909 he attended school in eastern Can- ads at Upper Canada college, Ash- bury college, and Trinity college school.

Mr. Soulliam was a director of the Canadian Daily Newspaper Publishers Association and The Canadian Press. From 1930 to I932 he was with the Oiiawa Cili- zen.

SERVED IN ARMY

Mr. Soutliam scrved with the Royal Canadian Artillery in the last war and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and commanded the 2nd Anti-Tank Regiment in northwest Europe. During the war he was mentioned in dispatches.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

CHICAGO (AP)-Enrico Fermi, Italian-born physicist whose con- trolled reicasc of nuclear energy made atomic power a reality. died of cancer Sunday.

The 53-year-old Nobel prize wire ncr first suggested the possibility of an atomic bomb in U. S. gov- crnmcnt officials in 1939. His first atomic pile, activated on the squash court under the west stands of Stagg field at the University of Chicago in December. 1942. pro- vided thc key to manufacture of the A-bomb.

Although Fermi had been ill for some time, his death came as a shock to his physicist associates at Chicago's Inatltu ta of Nuclear Studies.

His death immediately brought official condolences from Italy. in cludlng a cable to Mrs. Fermi

On Friday the state department. denounced the charges as "base- less," and said the treatment of the men violated the Korean armis- tice agreement for return of all prisoners of war. It demanded their release forthwith.
