Parkdale School at St. AvarcPs was formally opened last night when addresses were given- by Hon. M. R. McGuigan. minister of education, Hon. Dr. W. J. P. Mac- Millan, Mr. H. H. Shaw, superm- tendent of education, Rev. Dr. P. McMahon, rector of St. Dunstalrs Basilica.

Construction of the modern four room school at St. Avard's has Just been completed. M". James E. H a. r r 1 s, Charlottetown, architect who designed the building, Mr. John Hearn, chairman of the board of trustees. and Mrs. Earl Cooke. president of the Parkdale Women's Institute, spoke briefly. Dr. J. A. Clark presided.

France Increases Its Army Budget

PARIS, Dec. 3~(AP) -— While France's foreign minister sought a. new way to peace in eastern Eur- ope the Chamber of Deputies to- da yunantmously voted an increas- ed army budget for i938, and urg- ed the government to strengthen frontier defences.

The Chamber voted the army budget credits of 7,932,878,285 francs (about $264,500,000l, an in- crease of 1,381,506,231 francs (about $40,050,174) over this year's ap- propriations. Up for the Cham- ber's approval is an extraordinary army budget of more than 5,550,- 000,000 francs (about $i85.000,000), an increase oi 1_l86.500,000 francs (about $37,880,000).

CHICAGO, Dec. 3 -— (AP) —The death of 10 babies in St. Eliza- beth's Hospital spurred physicians tryiyng to save the lives of eight others suffering from a mysterious Intestinal malady today.

Dr. Herman N. Bundesen, presi- dent oi the Chicago Board of Health, announced the fatalities, reported they occurred within the last ll days and related scientists had joined in an heroic effort to check the outbreak.

The tiny victims of the deadly disease ranged in age from nine days to 24 days.

Dr. Bundcscil said the hospital voluntarily closed Lite nursery. and the 20 babies who had occupied it had been moved to isolated rooms or taken home under orders for close supervision by nurses.
