The Guiid Hall was crowded, and uvususl interest was taken in the proceedings, ow- ing to the fact that strenuous opposition has developed against Stuart Knill, Alder man fur Bridge-Within ward, who atood next in rotation for Lord Mayoralty, be- cause of his religious views, he being a Roman Catholic. Six candidates were pro- posed to the livery. When Knill’s name was mentioned it was received with loud cheering. There was a scene in tie cham- ber when Councillor Moore protested against the selection of Kaill because he was a Cathol.c.
