They have their handicaps also, scarcity of feed, large quantities of which must be imported, therefore high prices, high cost of ranch mater- ials; but offsetting these is a low- er labor 00st than ours and prox- imity to market, together with the fact that due to their early season they can place their pelts on London auctions in time to catch the November and December sales |whlch supply the Christmas trade.

W. Fred Burke. newly appointed Fox Field Man for the Provincial Government, is not letting the grass grow under his feet, but is utilizing his well knovm energy in the establishment of fox clubs. These have been quite a factor in Ziriproving the breed find time o! foxes in Norway and will nodoubt have their influence here. The Charlottetown Fox Club. which was one of the first if not the first. has done good work, Summerside Club. Tignish Club and others following in its footsteps. It is Mr. Burke's purpose to form clubs in every centre and in that way bring together larger numbers more easily than without organization.

Western Canada seems to be suffering from a. succession of troubles. There ls the drought which has almost ruined the wheat crop in many sections and dried up millions of acres of land, turn- ing it into sand heaps, but thelat- est visitation is equine encephali- tis that paralyzes the brain and spinal cord, visiting the animal with.a more or less lingering death. It has been the bane of fox ranchers in the Western Uli- ited States. Fromm Bros., largest breeders of silvers, had a, lot 0f trouble with it last year.

It is a. matter of the utmostirn-

portance that. no horse meat from Western Canada should be allow- ed to come to or be used in this country, because it may be from animals that are in the incipient stages‘ of’ the disease or even’ suf- fering from the disease and as such would start an epidemic among our foxes.

Ono of the subjects that we talked about was the establish- ment of central feed kitchens in various parts of the Hovlnoe. These feed kitchens would bereft- uipped with bone grinder. meat grinder, feed mixer. facilities for securing plenty of hot and cold water, have cement floors that could be washed out easily by means of a central drain pipe and bevelled sides. ‘They would be kept scrupulously clean. In eon- nection with them there would be a store room for food stuffs, and in localities remote from refriger- ation some form of cheap refrig- erating plant that would keep the frozen meat products for sufficient time to enable new supplies to be acquired.

One man and an assistant could make up the feed for from 3.000 to 5.000 foxes. The fox farmer could arrange to have a truck or trucks distribute the fox food to the various ranchers. They would call at; central feed kitchens at say three o’clock in the afternoon and secure their supplies, or if the fox rancher did not wish to Del’ his proportion of this distribution he could call for his own fox feed. or it. could be arranged that the fox farmers in each locality would take turns distributing the feed to their brother farmers, the idea being to cut down expense as much as possible.

A daily feed for 4.000 foxes, us- ing the formula of the Vim? Ranch and including the labor costs, would be about $115. This would take in all expenses eXfiepii distribution and the necessary charge for the building, plant P-hd distribution. It would mean that the farmers would get a uniform product, well mixed and of good quality ingredients bought at the lowest market. price. They WOlIld have no trouble going out and securing feed. no loss of tlme running to cold storage and back. and best of all they would have a bigger variety of diet for their foxes. All articles of equipment would be kept scrupulously clean because of the way the kit-eh!!! would be rtm and the way it would be built. therefore the chance of food poisoning would be consider- ably lessened.

It is the writer's belief that. a great many small fox farmers who have not the tecessa y equipment to grind their feed are paying out too much for fox feed. Those who cttt off hunks of meat are terrib- ly handicapped because they have no way of determining the exact weight of each piece and areliabl». to use too much. Then again they cannot add the many ingredients which are now necessary to secure a balanced ration and therefore
