Loypon, Nov 15,—Earl Kimberley,the Liberal leader in the House of Lords, in a speech at Newcastle last night said the present war was an abeolute necessity. He refused tobelieve that the Colonial Secretary, Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, had ever been guilty of acting in such a way as to provoke war. The worst that could be charged against him was that he had been guilty of bad diplomacy.

Cape Town, Nov 15.—Dr. Jameson has sailed for Exgland. The transport Har- lech Castle has arrived here.

Carzc Town, Nov 15.—An undated des- patch from Mafeking received by runner via Magalapye, Nov. 8 says:,

“To-day a'l is quiet. We have been bombarded pretty heavily all week. On

bayonet charge upon the Boer entrench- ments, driving them from their positions and bayoneting large numbers of the Boers, who must have lost very heavily.

The charge was most gallant and de- termined, The party however, could not hold the trenches; and they unfortunately lost six killed, two prisoners and nine wounded in their retirement.

The bombardment has been most inef- fectual, Everyone remains under shell- proof cover. So far the shells have only wounded one man. The town is most cheerful and determined to resis tattack to the utmoat limit.

On Friday night, Jan Botha, a well. known Boer commandant, told a man with an ambulance party that their loss had been very heavy during the recent engage~- menis and that his heart was very sore.

Manita, Nov. 15.—Farther details re~ garding the grounding of tLe United States cruiser Charleston show that she struck on a uncharted coral reef ten miles east of Karingin Island. Herstern was almost sub merged, and her bow elmost out of the water. A heavy sea was on and the cruiser began rolling violently. The water-tight doors were quickly closed, but were stove in under the engine depart~ ment.

After the first efforts to right Ler the officers feared that she might slide otf on account of the heavy sea and therefore abandoned the attemptto save her. They , hurried to the boats and rowed away pre- pared to fight for a landing with two colt guns azd a hundred and thirty-four rifles. They had with them ten daye’ rations. Some of the officers and men were dressed only in pyjamas aadtheir underclothing.

Lonpon, Nov 14.—A despetzh f:en Cape Town, dated November 9, atates that Boer sympath'zers tore up the railroad tracks near Fraserbary station, 300 miles from Cape Town. They were discovered in time to prevent an accident. Similar at- tempts have been made in other parts of the colony. The transport Sumatra ar~ rived at Cape Town yesterday from Durban with 15 wounded cfficers and two hundred men. All are doing well.
