TEA AND COFFRE,

Coflee, the drink more highly regarded to-day by the entire civilized world than any other, is the berry from several spec ies of the genus coffea, of which C. Arabica is the chief. The tirst use of this berry was in Abvasinia, where it was known A. D. 875. Thence it was brought to Arabia in the beginning of the fifteenth century. There both its use and the cultivation of the plant spread with great rapidity, and for two centuries that country furnished the supply of the world. In the middle of the sixteenth century coffee houses were established in Constantinople for the pur pose of affording the common people great- er facilities for obtaining the drink. In 1652 it made its first appearance in Great Britain, through the opening of a coffee house in London by a Greek, Pasqua Ros- sie, who thus immortalized bimseif more simpiy than has ever any other man. But its tame bad reached England before that, for Bacon wrote, “They have in Turkey a drink called coftee. This drink comforteth the brain and heart and help- eth digestion.’

Tea, which more than any other com- petitor might dispute with coffe the claim to universality as a drink, 1s & Ba tive of China, where it has been cultiy ated for at lea-t a thousand years. The com mercial article is the prepared leaf of the shrub Thea Chinensis, and, while there are iwany colors, varieties and flavors known to the market, all are the preduct of the same plant, the varieties depending on the treatment after the leaves are gathered. The cultivation of tea has been extended into Japan and throughout the tropics to Java, Australia, Natal and Brazil.

According to Chinese tradition, the vir tues of tea were discovered by the Emper- or Chinnung, 2737 years B.C. Knowledge of it was carried to Japan, and it was there cultivated in the thirteenth century, but we do not find it in use in England until some four hundred years later. Pepys mentions having drunk it for the first time in 1660, showing that it was then a novelty. But its use must have spread rapidly, fur in 1678 it appears to have been in general use.- James Knapp Reeve, in February Lippincott’s.

F. gives some account of “Domestie Service cn the Pacific Slope” aud the difficulties thereof. “ The Child and his Fictions” is a plea-- ant and suggestive paper by Elizabeth Ferguson Seat. Frederic M. Bird poin's out certain “ Paralyzers of Style,” some of which are intended to have a precisely opposite effect, while some are the result of mere carelessness. The poetry of the number is by Joseph Wharton, Charies G. D. Roberts and Clinton Scollard.

THE VENEZUELA BOUNDARY

It is asserted that, in the great re-earch at the Foreign Office which followed the news that important data had been over- looked, there was found a mass of material which had been put aside by a former Secretary of State as of little value at the time when the dispure appeared to be dropping out cf eigl.t. Itis now stated that this evidence furnishes almost decis- ive proof of a large portion of the British claim.

On the other band it is said that Major Hume, the British official who has been pending several weeks examining the or- iginal archives at Madrid, submitted his report to Lord Salisbury on last Thurs- day. His discoveries completely destroy the foundation of the British claim to the Schomburg line or to territory anywhere near it. The evidence, it is said, was sub- mitted by Lord Salisbury to the Cabinet # few days azo anda blue book containing all the facts will be iseued before Parlia- ment meets,

It may ve said that the British case will be published either before or after the meeting of Parliament, but without refer— ence to the American commission, which is regarded in London as the chief obstacle to a pacific adjustment of the question at issue.

THE RETIRED BURGLAR. A Brief Account of a Lively and Inter- esting Incident in His Career.

**A house that J went into one night in a town not very far out of New York ” said the retired burglar, ‘didn’t begin to pan out as well as I expected it would, and I couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed. I'd been all over the house and hadn’t got much more’n enough to pay my car fare. But when I came down stairs again I saw stand- ing in a corner of the hall by the front door something I hadn’t noticed when I went up that pleased me very much, and that was a tricycle; a_ girl’s tricycle, with two high wheels and a small wheel in front, with galvanized wire spokes and a long handle to steer by, and a seat upholstered with red velvet, and all that sort of thing, you know. You've seen lots of ’em, no doubt.

‘Well, now, my little girl had been asking me for some time for a tricycle, but business had been so everlasting bad that I really hadn’t felt as though I could afford to buy her one, but here wasone waiting for me te carry off, and it made me smile to look at it; a bright, new one it was, too. It was pretty near Christmas, and I thought I'd keep it and give it to her for a Christmas present.

“There wasn't any rubber tires on it, sol didn’t dare to roll it across the hall, but I picked it up and carried it to a door that opened into an entry that opened to the cellar stairs, the way I'd comein, Igot it to the first door all right, and into that entry way or hall without hitting anything, but in gettin’ it through the door leading to the cel- lar stairs, goin’ first myself and backin’ down with it, the long handle flopped over somehow and caught in the door when I was just a step down, I tried to free it, and it freed easier than 1 ex- pected, and lost my balance and my hold on the tricycle and fell down stairs.

‘Noise? Well, now, I tell you, I was in a steamboat explosion once, and once in an explosion in a sawmill; but I never began to hear so much noise in my life when me and that tricycle roll- ed down the cellar stairs. The tricycle fell over me and I fell over the tricycle, and somewhere on the way down I be- lieve I must have fallen through the tricycle, for wh¢n we got down to the bottom I was all scratched and cut and my clothes were tore, and the tricycle was a wreck. I stood there for 4 minute looking at it till Iheard two men coming down the stairs to the hall above, and then I went away and left itlying there at the foot of the cellar stairs.

She was having her picture taken, and her chum and the photographer were having a hardtime. The photo- grapher had patiently posed her a score of times, and the chum had told her that each one was betterthan the last and she looked perfectly lovely that way, until she was too weary to do more than smile in a perfunctory man- ner, And still the other girl fussed and hesitated and wouldn’t be taken. At last the chum noticed that she kept glancing toward her feet, and she had a bright idea, a perfect inspiration.

‘*Why don’t you try a standing posi- tion ?” she suggested, ignoring the fact that this had been done several times, and the other giyl jumped at the idea.

“T believe I will,” she said, rising quickly, and the chum caught her dress in a seemingly accidental fashion so that the tiny foot, with its pointed toe, was disclosed. Then the other girl smiled ina satisfied manner and consented to be taken, andthe chum looked as pleasant as though she didn’t know she would hear that ‘‘'Mamie pulled my dress a little by accident, and the photographer liked the picture so well that he would finish them that way.”—Chicago Record,

The Firemar’s Story.

“The coolest man I ever saw.” said a veteran fireman, ‘I met at a fire ina dwelling-house. We found him in an upstairs front room dressing to go out. the fire by this time was rushing up through the house at a great rate.

‘**Halloa, there!’ we shouted to him when we looked in at the door, ‘the house is afire !’

‘**Would it disturb you if I should remain while you age putting it out?” he said, lifting the comb from his hair and looking around at us.

‘‘He had on a low waistcoat and his dress-coat lay across a chair.

‘Seeing us staring at him, he pushed his comb into his hair again and wene on with fixing his hair. He then put down the comb, put on his coat and hat, and picked up his overcoat.

***Now Im ready, gentlenen,’ he said.

‘‘We started, but the stairway had now been closed up by fire. We turned tothe windows. The men had gota ladder up on the front of the house.

** ‘Now, then,’ we said to him, when we came to the window.

“And I assure you we had to go down the ladder first and let him come last.”

Salvationists in Australia.

Gen. Booth’s visit to the Australian colonies has been a triumphant success. In Brisbane he was received by a body of Salvationistr over 1,000 strong, many of whom had travelled hundreds of miles to take part in the demonstration of welcome to their leader. At Svdney be had almost a royal reception, the chief features of the

rocession including a mounted brass nd, and a mounted contingent of “Hallelujah Lasses” from the country districts, the latter being splendid riders. There can be not question respecting the hold which the Salvation Army has ob- tained on the popular mind in Australia, or the thoroughness with which it seeks to accomplish its work. It has its agents ot every prison gate, in the hospitals and infirmaries, and among the wretched wo- men who prowl the city streets after dusk. The energy of the Salvationists is wonder- ful. TLey penetrate into the mort remote parts of the bush, make their way on camels across the arid deserts of Western Australia, and fearlessly brave the spears and boomerangs of hostile aboriginals. They are undoubtedly becoming a tre- mendous social force in Australia—The Galignanj Messenger.
