S’side Kinettes supply texts to towns elementary schools

The Summerside Kinettes, headed by Mrs. Bernie MacAr- thur, carried out a number of projects during the past year.

The club, whose object is to £0110! the aims and objects of the sponsoring Kinsmen Club and to carry on such service work upon which the club may decide, .was formed 14 years ago by Mrs. Anne Coulson.

In 1963, alone, the Kinettes supplied supplementary reading and text books for the Summer- aide Elementary schools— Sum- lner, Elm and Central Streets.

Assistance was also given the Kinsmen in their Glristmas tree project with money, mitts and socks being donated.

Money for their projects are obtained by various means. The Kinettes received 10 per cent of the proceeds from the more than 1,000 lobster suppers serv- ed during the last Carnival. Oth- er methods are the Kinette Doll Lottery and rummage sales. An- other fund raising project was the selling of Christmas cards.

Members meet twice monthly at different homes and in addi- tion they stage several of dinner meetings during the year.

Mrs. MacArthur said that planning has already begun in preparation for the National Kin- smen convention slated for Sumrnerside in June.

During 153 the Auxiliary as- sisted fire victims in Miscouche, Tignish, Borden and Morel}. They also help such organiza- tions as the Salvation A r in y, etc.

The club also helps the parent Legion home and during the past year donated a new stove and an air vent for the kitchen in the home.

Another project of the Auxil- hry is a $230 bursary to assist a student or students from Surn- merside. These students are mainly sons and daughters of veterans. in 153 the bursary was divided between four stu- dents, two boys and two girls.

The provincial Liberal Wom- en‘s Association was formed in 1948. The meetings of the asso- ciation are held semi— annually at the Islander Motor Lodge. There are twelve local clubs in Prince Edward Island. all of which are affiliated with the Provincial organization. The local clubs and the provincial association are in turn afﬁliated with the National Federation of Liberal Women of Canada, by payment of an annual fee.

The primary aim of the aoo Liberal Women‘: Organizations in Canada is to give the ladies an opportunity to take part in the democratic process.

Centennial theme for fashion show

A group of young Charlotte- town women with a truly ambi- TlOl.lS program is the Junior Lau- ies Aid of the Prince Edward island Hospital.

Members meet at the Cundall Home every third Thursday at- it-rnoon each month from Sept. until May. Organized May 7. 1946, the club's current mem- bership of 60 raise funds for hos- pital equipment, comforts for patients. additional furnishings for the nurses residence, and to contribute to a scholarship fund to Nursing School graduates for post- graduate work.

The hospital cart is a most ap- preciated project of the Aid. This mobile canteen is brought to each patient's room six days a week, providing them the op- portunity to purchase magazin- es. stationery, cosmetics and candy.

The annual fashion show and

dinner at the Charlottetown Bo tel is the Aid's major fund rais- ing project. This year's three day showing begins Munch 16 with Mrs. Alfred MacNeil and Mrs. Walter Auld as co-convex» ers. They and their committee have arranged a novel program with a Centennial Year theme that should prove interesting.

Other activities include the League of Mercy Coffee Party held each year in October, dec- orating Christmas trees in the hospital wards and waiting rooms, and catering to the Busi- ness Men's Luncheon at th e YMCA. ‘

Hi -Y Clubs adopt three Greek girls

The Senior Hi-Y Clubs. Beta To-L‘ and Delta Bona Fide each year hold sen'ice and money- raising projects as well as pro- grams on careers and other sub- jects of importance to the mem- bers.

The clubs participat annual- ly in the Induction Service of all Hi-Y members which is held at a local church.

Proceeds from autumn life saver sales are sent to World Service.

In December. Delta Bona I-‘ide and Beta Ta-U jointly sponsor the annual Snowflake Tea at the YMCA.

Delta Bona Fide held a Hal- loween Party for the Herbert (lrphange children and at pres- ent Beta Ta-U is planning a par- ty for the children at the Sani- troium.

Each of the clubs has adopted a Greek girl and send money for their clothes and schooling.

Beta Ta-U holds an annual Christmas dance and in the spring sponsors Hi—Y Day. Sum- merside Hi-Y is invited to Char- lottetown for the day and sports competitions, banquet and dance are held.

Every February Delta Bona Fide holds a coronation dance

at which the king and queen of Hi—\' are chosen.

A Guys and Dolls fashion show \\il.ll clothes from Moore an d .\ia«.-Leod's and Henderson and (‘udmorc‘s, modelled by Hi-Y boys and girls, is put on every MBay be Delta Bona Fide.

Each year the clubs donate something to the YMCA. Delta Bona Fide helped buy a new movie projector. and Beta Ta-U installed drinking taps.

On Christmas Eve, Delta Bona T-‘idc held a sing song for Hi-Y members and friends which in- cluded Christmas carols, the Christmas story and lunch.

Also at Christmas, Beta Ta-U packed a Christmas basket for a needy family and Delta Bona Fide purchased tool and handi- craft equipment for the Cerebral Palsy Day School.

Both clubs have arranged counselling discussions on care- er- opportunities with a hair- dresser, cosmetician, doc tor, minister, as well as speakers on radio work, world service, Island history and the Women's Army Corps.

A panel discussion on boy-girl relations was held recently be- tween the boys’ club and the two girls‘ clubs.
