The Supplementary Estimates, P. E. Island’s Share

A Large Grant for Defences. Orrawa, March 28.

The final supplementary estimates were

submitted yesterday. The total of the item

is $1,501,825.52. P. E. Island grants — under the head of harbors and rivers are rec»nstruction of Souris Sreakwater, $20,000; heavy repairs to Sturgeon Wharf, $1,000; dredging at Cape Traverse, $4,000; repsira to breakwater, dredging, ete, at Wo.d Islands, $6,000; repairs and construction of new wing to the North Rustico Breezwater, $1,000. A new dredge is to be provided for the Mari- time Provinces for which there is a grant of $15,000. Among the grants on ac- count of Indians is one of $150 to complete a house for the teachers at Lennox Island schvol, P. E. I. Probably the most important and the most significant item in these estimates is a grant of $105,000 towards the defences of Eequimault, B. C., $35,000 of the grant being to cover the pay of a detachment of Royal eaten Artillery and Royal Engineers. Among the militia items is also a sum of $17,212 for gratuities to officers of the active militia staff who are to be placed on the retired list. For the purchase of mod- ern firearms the eum of $16,500 ia asked. The Britieh Columbia members will feel happy over a grant of $100,000 for a new Post Office at Victoria. For harbors and rivers the total of grants by Provinces are ; Nova Scotia, $7,874; P. E. Island, $32,400; New Brunswick, $10,- 250; Quebec, $32,100; Outario, $49,510; Brit ish Columbia, 84,200.

Balfour’s Motion of Censure Defeated.

Lonpvox, March 28. In the House of Commone debate last night, the vote on Baltour’s motion that the Irish executive should be censured for condoning serious offences, and thus bringing the law into general contempt, resulted in a majority of forty-seven for the Government.

The Herald newspaper has again gone up in smoke, a fire having broken out in the office last evening at 10 o'clock. Before 11 30 the entire establishment was a total wreck. The building on Victoria Square was com pletely gutted, The Herald's loss will be about $35,000. $22,008,

Orrawa, March 28. Minister Foster made the promised state- ment with regard tothe French treaty. He said he didn’t think there were any more papers to be brought down, Communications were atill going on, bet had not yet come to the point where he could make any definite statement. He hoped to do so to-morrow.
