The curious legend of the eaile and the baby comes to us by Word of mouth only, and the story which I shall now give to my readers had its setting in that part of the Island known today as Borden. So far as this writer has been able to gather. the tale ran something like this:

Once upon a time there lived near Cape 'l‘ormentine a half-breed Ind- ian with his wife and three small sons. The third child, an infant of three months. was in its cradle outside the door, getting a sun bath. The parents, with the other two children. were eating their tioonday meal when all of a sud- den the screams of the baby fell on their ears.

John Knockwood and hll wife rushed from the house just in time to see a large eagle making off with their baby held fast. in its talons.

Knockwood rushed backinto the house and came out with a loaded musket. l-lis wife moved close to his side and laid a restraining hand on hia arm.

"No shoot, John. Ye might keel the child," she said between sobs.

Her ltusbund threw down the weapon and wiped the perspira- tion from his brow.

"Wouldn't have done ne good no- ho\v." hc said. "it was too far off to get a good shot."

Then he led his hysterical wife back inio the shack. where her lame-motions were added to those of the children.

The following morning John Knot-kv-xood was on the move early. llis mission was to notify his neigh- bors of thc awful happening of the previous day. so that every man among them might be prepared to shoot the blrd. should it again vlslt the district.
