Obituary.

Dzrarrep this life at Cumberland Hill, Dundas, P. E. I., on the morning of June 5th, 1889, Mr. Peter Johnstone, aged 68 years.

The deceased was only ill four days, of inflammation of the lungs, and, although he had the best of medical attendance through his short iliness, death took him. He was the eldest son of the late Sergeant Williaz, Johnstone, of the 42nd Royal Highlanders, and, last survivor of Sergeant Johnstone’s family—with the exception of Mrs. John M. Johnstone, of Cumberland Hill, who is. i ue left. The deceased was married to adaughter of the late Thomas Alexander, of Charlottetown, who died some years ago, leaving no family. He was a great reader, and had a wonder- ful memory. Any passage in the Bible that was wanted was quickly turned up by bim, Talk to him of battles or disputes between nations, he could tell you all about them, his memory was so great.

Although not a regular church-guer, he was a strong adherent of the Presby:erien Charch. Deceased was always a Liberal- Conservative in politics, and a loyal subject of the British Queen. Nothing would in- sulc him more than for any person to speak to him against England or Her Most Gracious (Jaeen. But now his body sleep: in Dundas Presbyterian Churchyard, and his soul, we hope, is at rest.

sugar Goes Kiting. A RISE OF MOKE THAN 60 PER CENT, IN LESS THAN THREE MONTHS.

Sugar has gone up, is going up, and will probably continue to go up until the next beet root crop is gathered. Taking it by the quotations in the London market from Jan. 1 to March 15 of the present year, beet sugar was steady at 15 shillings and 1$ pence per 112 pounds. From that price it steadily rose to 23 shillings and 9 pence, at which it stood on April 23. - This morn- ing the price in the same market was 25 | shillings and 3 pence.

A rise of more than 70 per cent. on the price of March 15 has thus taken place in less than three months. As the profits in handling sugar are always fractional, this increased price has fallen, and is likely to fall still more heavily on the consumer.

There is no article so universally con- sumed as sugar. To the poor and the rich it is equally indispensible. But sugar has been so cheap for many years past that such advances are most keenly felt by the poorer classes.

Dear sugar, means dear jam, dear candy, dear pie, dear ices, dear tea and dear coffee. Even some vicious habits will be hard hit by the advance, as when chewing gumand mixed drinks will become more expensive luxuries than at present.

The peculiarity of the present rise in sugar is that it isdue to perfectly legiti- mate vauses, if statisticians can be trusted. The great European beet root crop, from which so much sugar is nowadays made, has fallen off seriously for the past two years. During the same peviod the world’s consumption of sugar marked its accustom- ed average advance of 5 per cent. over the previous year.—N. Y. Sun.
