Convention Postponed Through Premiers Illness

The Conservative convention at Summersidc to nominate a candid- ate to fill the vacancy of the Fifth District caused by the death of Hon. L. M. McNelll was postponed owing to the unavoidable absence,

through illness of Hon. J. D. Stewart, Premier. . The meeting which was very

largely attended was held in the Town Hall and presided over by Mr. Lea Mountain, who at the commencement invited Dr. McMil- Ian to address the meeting.

Dr. McMillan, after expressing his regret that this convention should be necessary" at all, said the Premier had .‘ queste’ him to ask the delegates topostponc the meet- ing until he was able to be pres- ent as he always made it a point to be at every nominating conven- tion, also that he wished to out- line certain policies of the Govern- ment. V

The meeting was therefore post- poned until the Premier's health would enable him to be present.

Among those present at the meeting were Hon. Adrian F. Arsenault, Mr. A. F. Arnett, Mr. D. B. McDonald and other promin- ent Conservatives.

Hon. Mr. Sharp addressed the meeting and spoke of the debt that the present Government was faced with when they came into office, to the tune of one million and a quarter dollars, and of the neces- sity of curtailing expenses until they had matters straightened out. He referred to the extra expense of building Prince of Wales Col- lege and Falconwood Hospital. Tenders had been called for build- ing the Coliege and would be con- sidered in the, next few clays. He assured the meeting that local la- bour would bc employed as much as possible in the construction of the building. Other. matters were touched upon by Mr. Sharp briefly.

Hon. Dr. McMillan was next call- ed upon and in a short speech ex- pressed his confidence that the Fifth District- would return a. Con- servative member at the coming by- eléction, as has been the case in other provinces. He mentioned the fact that Prince County had been given two very important portfolios by this ‘Government. He also refer- red to the growing needs of the old people and that the Government at every meeting were granting more money to assist them. They had appointed a man to go through the province to find out who were eligible for old age pensions and at the next session of the Govem- ment they would endeavor to pro- vlde Part if not all of the amount required for the pensioning of those who were in need.

Mr. J. F. Arnett added a few re- marks in which he made mention of the work the Federal Govern- ment is doing in this province, which included 1,500 spent at Tig- nlsh and work at Summerside and Cape Traverse.

Mr. A. S. McKay moved a vote of thanks to the members of the Government for their able address- es, and the meeting closed with The King. S.

Bjerknes, docked here tonight with coal from Swansea, Eng, a tale was told of near-rescue of the plane in which Lou Relchers was forced down near the coast of Ireland in his attempted hop from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, to Dublin, Ireland, scheduled stopping places in his attempt to reach Paris from Newark, N. .7.

0n May 15. two days after Relchers brought his plane down in the oceanynear the liner Pres- ident Roosevelt, which picked him up, Captain Bjerknes sighted the derelict plane in heavy seas 30 miles south of Fastnct, an Island near the southernmost part of Ire- land. The plane was at that time 1'! miles distant from where it had been brought down.

Wins Honors In Music Contest '1

Rachel and Madeline Reed, ‘the 11 and l5 year old daughters of Mr. and Ma's. Rufus C. Reed, l8 Buck street. won honors in the annual Junior Club contest of the Massa- chusetts Federation of Music clubs held Saturday in Stcinert hall, Bos- ton.

In the violin contest Rachel Reed was awarded the silver cup and a certificate from the national federa- tion for winning class B for l1 to 12 years. She was accompanied by her sister in playing Tsrtlni s "Sarabanda/f and "The Dance of the Marionettes" by Winternltz. This is the second cup she has won in the state contests.

Madeline received first honorable mention in class D of the piano solo class, playing “Courante' by Bach, "Waltz in D Major" by Glazounoff and "Song of the Rushes" by Seei- ing. ‘

Miss Mabel Felch of Seabrook, re- ceived honorable mention in the so- prano voice class with "The Icicle ' by Bassett and "Flower in a Cran- nied Wall" by Mason. she was ac- companied by Mrs. F. Austin Stow- ell of this city.

LONDON, May 30-—(Canadian Press Cable)—Marrlage, divorce and birth control are discussed in the report of a committee of the lower house convocation of 0m. terbury on resolutions on marriage and sex passed by the Lambeth Conference in 1930. The commit- WB’! report, to be presented this week to the convocation in London, had hitherto been held confidential.

SUPBEME COURT JUDGMENT Audgment has been handed down in the Supreme Court in the case of George W. Gardiner, plaintiff lga-irlst Murdock N. McLeod, de- fendant. This was action of dam- ages for trespass to land and was tried before Judge Arsenault, with- out a. jury. By the terms of the Judgment, the contentions of the plaintiff that the defendant had wrongly erected fences on his prop- erty, were upheld and he was also awarded $50.00 damages. The de- fmdant received damages of $5.00 on his counterclaim. R. R. Bell for plaintiff and Donald McKlnnon K. C. for the defendant.
