VlCEtDrESIdel'1t and a former would- be vice-president, two of the most interesting congressional personal- ities of the Roosevelt-Truman re- gime, are seeking to return to Capitol Hill 1. the Nov. 2- elec- lions.

They are 76-year-old Alben Bark- ley of Kentucky and 50-year-old Glen Taylor of Idaho, both Demo- cratic candidates for the Senate. both fond of making music and both causing grave concern to the Republican senators they are try- ing to unseat. Otherwise they are about as far apart as the poles.

Barkley. a self-made man of the Kentucky hills, has been in Con- gress more years than most people can remember.

He was Harry Truman's running mate in 1948 but in 1952, after his popular term as "The Veep.” an expression he virtually brought into the language. he was dropped from the ticket.

In the present campaign. he is making speeches at the rate of about 20 as day to prove his vigor and seek defeat of his Republican opponent, Senator John Sherman Cooper.

Mary's Anglican Church, sumnierside was the scene of a very pretty wedding last evening at 6 o'clock when Claudia Alward. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Barwise. became the bride of Ron- ald H. Greenaway, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Greenaway of Sarnia, Ontario. The double ring ceremony was performed by venerable Arch- deacon G. R. Harrison. The music was under the direction of the church organist. Mr. Everett Pen- warden. The choir, Voice That Breathed o'er" Eden" preceded the bridal party down the aisle and sang "0 Perfect Love" during the signing of the register. Bouquets of gladioll decorated :he altar and bows of white ribbons and mums marked the guest pews.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, was charming in her floor-length bouffant skirted gown of white nylon net over taffeta with chantilly lace bolero, featur- ing high neckline and long sleeves tapering to a point over the hands. The finger-tip veil of tulle illusion was arranged from a headdress of white velvet. she carried a show- er bouquet of Better Time roses. Miss Betty Barwtse was her sisters bridesmaid and was gowned in aqua net over tafetta with match- ing head dress and carried a bouquet of Bi-iarcliif roses.

Mrs. Barwise chose for her daughter's wedding a grey suit with navy accessories and a corsage of Premier Pink roses, Mr. Robert Stewart was groomsman and Mesrs. Ivan and Linwood Gill were the ushers. A recep on following the ceremony was held in St. Marys Hall for forty guests.

The bride's table. with its artistic arrangement of autumn flowers and lighted tapers, was centered with a three-tier wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom. Mrs. Elmer Warn presided over the tea cups.

Sharp Debate Marks ' Alherton Potato Meeting

MacDonald. chairman of the Potato Marketing Board, at Alberton last evening outlined the reasons which the board believes are necessary to the establishing of the selling system which has been referred to as the compulsory

Mr. MacDonald explained the different means of controls that have been tried since the organiz- ation of the board. Last year, he said, the board did not hold up the movement of the potato crop. The movement of the potato crop is an eight or nine month job. "We found out last year," he said, "that you could not effectively control '15 different salesmen, unless you first obtained control of the product, and were in a position to determine the price at which that product would be sold, whether it was back to your licensed dealers or to a market outside the province." Op- erating in this proposed way and then the only way a dealer can break the board regulations and the proper price levels established by the board is by losing money himself, rather than having the producer stand the loss, he said.

"Let no one think that I am against the legitimate dealer who is trying to do what is right, and our records of last year should prove that We did: not try to act in a dictatorial way. That we tried to treat everybody alike-each and every dealer, whether they were opposed to the board or not.

"We set up movement commiss- ions for those dealers that were absolutely fair in relation to the price of potatoes last year. They were satisfied with those commis-

Forecasts Shorter Work Week. More Buying Power

WASHINGTON, (AP)-A govern- ment economic committee says itis reasonable to assume that Ameri- cans in 1965 will be working at least four hours a week less than they do now.

Furthermore, it foresees an in- crease of nearly 30 per cent in the buying power of consumers in the next 10 years.

This forecast of the ible eco- nomic situation in 1905 was given Monday by Dr. Grover Ensley, staff director of the joint congres- sional committee for the economic report, in a speech before farm outlook conference.

Reporting on a study of future economic possibilities made by his committee, Erisley said a popula- tion of 190,000,000 is likely by 1960 compared with 182,000,000 now.

This might take the form of the reduc- tion in the work week by 1965 of as much as four hours, or an in- crease in vacation or holidays of 20 to 25 days per year, or some combination of these alternatives, adding up to a reduction of about 200 hours per year per man 0.7 1105."

Britain Earns Trade Surplus

LONDON (Reuters)-During the first half of 1954, Britain earned a surplus of .e154.000.000 in her trade with the world. 1

The figure was published by the treasury Monday in its half-yearly report on the balance of payments.

It compares with a surplus of only C2.000.000 in the first half of 1953 and a surplus of f:lO'l,000.000 in the second half.

Defence aid from the United States fell to 388,000,000 in the first half of this year, from 3100,000 and 31.10.000.000 in the first and second halves of 1953.

In answer to a question on what percent the boom required of the sellng price for the expenses of the operation of the board ,he said that last year the selling agency merchandlsed 8,850,000 bushels of potatoes at an administrative cost of approximately 0140.000, which is 1 2-3 cents per bushel. Of this amount about 370,000 was paid to the bankers as interest charges.

If it had not been for these in- terest charges which would not have applied in a normal year, all items of administration concerned with the selling agency, including all saleries, would have amounted to less than one-cent per bushel.

"Now, is one-cent per bushel too much for you producers to pay in your own organization to enable you to apply a more effective overall control that will get you more money for your potatoes, year in and year out?" he asked.

"I believe, and there is plenty of

"I assure you that if this plan goes into effect, that the initial payment will be as high as is pos- sible to make it, having regard to the overall picture." Mr. Mac- Donald said.

In reply to a. question. Mir. Mac- Donald said that the board's pro- posed regulations pertained only to sales 01 potatoes outside the province. Sales between farrriere, and sales by farmers to any con- sumers or stores within the pm- vince are not affected in any way.

The selling agency will sell po- tatoes to the best possible advant- age. In one of two ways, either back to the licensed dealers for shipment from the province. or directly to purchasing accounts outside the province. The chief point in this connection, is that when potatoes are sold back to the licensed dealers, the not re- turn received, from them must be comparable to the net return the selling agency will receive by mak- ing direct sales. It is not to put dealers out of business, he said. If local dealers can sell potatoes to as good. or better, advantage than the selling agency itself. then "I do not see how they have any- thing to fear.”

Their basic costs will be fixed. but if they sell them at the same price the selling agency can they will be doing all right, and if they can sell them at a higher price then they will be doing still bet- ter, he said.
