FIRST RECORDS FOR ISLAND: SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN TANAGER &

VARIED THRUSH:

On May 3'“, Dan Kennedy received an E-mail from Bill Thomson , the Editor of Bird Watcher’s Digest, of a sighting of a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. The sighting came from Garth and Bonnie McIsaac of Alberton. They discovered the bird in their yard on May lst, 2005 and, after consulting with bird books and the intemet, E-mailed Mr. Thomson. Thanks to Dan’s and Dwaine Oakley’s prompt action, the sighting was confirmed and electronic

image records were obtained.

Late on May 10'”, 2005, Bruce Smith reported that he received a call to the Island Nature Trust from Barb Gaudet of Margate. She indicated that had what she thought was a western Tanager at her feeder. She noted the red head on a yellow body. This is quite distinctive and there is not much else that has a distinctive red head. Responding to Dwaine Oakley’s E-mail, Les and Joan Homans visited Barb’s feeders and, on the evening of Wednesday, May 11‘“, 2005 were able to view and confirm the sighting. Les took three photos of PEI's first ever Western Tanager that had been feeding at Barb’s feeder since May 8th.
