ANTI-Poverty.—An exchange says that one branch alone of the Anti-Poverty Society in New York raised $718 as a Christmas present for Dr. McGlynn. Anti-poverty appears to be a success, at least in its application to the doctor. oqneihnetipetetinn
Uxper Akrest. A Winuipeg farmer named A. J. Hatfield, who has borne a good reputation, but who is said to possess an un- governable temper when in liquor, has been arrested on suspicion of having murdered his wife whose body was tound on Christmas day some distance from their house frozen stiff and her face mutilated. Hatfield says he only remembers to have struck her with his hand.
Str. ANDREW’s CuurcH, Vancouver, B.C.— The Canada Presbyterian of last week states that a committee of three clergymen, Messrs. Croil, Barclay and anotier, have been com- missioned by the congregation to select a pastor for this church. This committee have chosen Rev. Mr. McLaren, of Ontario, and a letter from amember of the church to a friend here states that a call has been sent to Mr. McLaren at a salary of $2,500 per annum, Vancouver is booming all its business—lay and clerical.

Tue Dorcnester Fixe.—Accountant Fos- ter, of the Department of Justice, who held a special enquiry into the cause of the late fire at Dorchester penitentiary, has sent in his report. The report corroborates the previous supposition that the fire originated from the pipe of the late deputy warden, who laid it thoughtlessly on the window of hi sitting room before reti:ing. The report ex- presses the opivion that great credit is due to Warden Forster and other officials for the a and systematic manner in which the ire was extinguished.
Scort Acr.—D. J. Freeman and wife, of Middleton, have been pretty heavily fined for violation of the Scott Act. The first case against Freeman for liquor selling resulted in a fine of $75; the second case for tamperin with witnesses resulted in a fine of $°6; an a suit against Mrs. Freeman for retailing the ardent, was settled with a fine of $50.
David Foster, of Oxford, has been convicted under the Canada Temperance Act, (1), for selling liquor, (2), for keeping and exposing it for sale, (3), for selling, and has been fined $50 for each offence. He is now serving three months in jail under conviction,

A Sree Bripegz.— One topic of absorb- ing interest to the people of Cape Breton Island during the past few months, has been as to the nature of the crossing which the government would decide upon for the Cape Breton railway to traverse the Grand Narrows. Several methods of crossing were proposed, but the majority of the Cape Breton people suggested the builditig vf « bri hen Mr, Schrieber visited the Island durifig’the summer went carefully into the question, and since that time the government has fully con- sidered the matter, with the result that it has been decided to build a steel bridge at the Narrows, ata cost of about $500,000.

PropaBty A Canarp.—The New York Heruld has the following special from San Francisco: ‘‘ A small war is going on at Hono- lulu in which the British Government may be involved. It seems members of a British com- mercial house were granted a franchise by the legislature to build a street railroad from Honolulu to Wakiki. The firm did not fol- low the conditions of the franchise relative to the class of rails used, and also erected poorly constructed bridges. The Minister of the In- terior ordered the road commissioners to tear up the rails which was done. The English house complained to the British Minister, J. W. Woodenhouse, and when the latter pro- tested against the Hawaiian officials’ action he was answered with a ‘‘to ——- with the British government and its commissioners also.’ The commissioner has reported the whole matter to the Imperial Government. In the meantime the road is not being built and the end of the matter is not yet.
Novetty.—At last we are treated toa novalty in the way of almanac-making. Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co., the well-known manufactur- ing chemists of Lowell, Mass., send us_ their Almanac for 1889, in the shape of a good-sized book, embracing editions in English, calculat- ed for the various sections of the United States, the Dominion of Canada, India, South Africa and Australia ; also, editions in nine other languages. The volume contains, also, specimen pages of pamphlets issued by the company in eleven languages not represented by the almanacs, including Greck, Turkish, Armenian, Chinese, Burmese, and Hawaiian —twenty-one languages in all. A RemarwxaBle Cunz.—According to a story told the St. John Globe, James S. Coss- man, of that city, has been remarkably cured
Gondola Point. Cossman had been covered with sores for four years, and had been dis- miased as incurable after five months in the Massachusetts general hospital. He came home to die, but three months ago he was ad- vised to consult Mr. Logan. He did so, and the result was that he is a strong, hearty man to-day, with no sore of any kind, and perfectly able to do a good day’s work. When asked about Mr. Logan's cure he said he charmed the sores away—that he was the seventh son, therefore had great power. He said he took him for nine mornings before sunrise, and after spitting on hie hande he

It seems stupid to send this mail to Charlottetown to be assorted there and then sent us. Why can’t the Post Office Department look into this and have sufficient enterprise to change it—or give a solid reason for not ding so? It would be an improvement that the Pro- vince would appreeiate.
The S. 8S. Halifax, while in port, was visited by many of our citizens, who great- ly admired her handsome equipment. It would be of immense advantage if, during the summer, a steamer of thie line called, sey fortnightly, here and at Souris. This winter, efforts should be put forth to gain this end. The Government should enquire into the importance of the matter, and offer a subsidy towards a coasting steamer to connect Murray Harbor, Dundas and Cardigan with this port to centre sufficient freight to make it worth while calling for. Such coasting stearer could ply on Cardi- gan ferry a day or two in each week if the other ports did not require her every day.

Sudden Deaths.
Thursday morning last, Murdock Me- Farlane, 67 years old, a respectable and well to do farmer, of South Side St. Pat- rick’s Channel, C. B., asked his wife to accumpany him to visit his brother John, who lives on Baddeck Inlet, two miles across the channel. In the afternoon while rowing homeward he suddenly dropped the oars and died. The poor heurt-stricken widow had to take the oars and do her best to reach the shore.
Oliver Johnson, of St. Louis, Kent Co., N. B., started on a hunting expedition a few days ago. He was found in the woods in an unconscious state, and expired shortly after being carried home.
