The new federal budget announced a reduction of $5 million in tax revenues from the change in the provisions regarding income inclusion rates on capital gains arising fi‘om donations of ecologically sensitive land and easements. "This will help Canada's landowners and conservation groups in their efforts to preserve Canada's wildlife habitat and natural heritage." Jeff Jordan of Murray Harbour found a walrus tusk while out scallop fishing off Pictou Island in December. The tusk appears to be from a young walrus and weighs 2 pounds. Jeff was fishing with Eric MacKinnon on the boat Islander III. While working at the culling table Jeff picked up what he thought was a black stick. Closer inspection showed it was a walrus tusk, the first that either man had seen in more than 10 years of fishing. (From The Beck Bulletin # 7, Feb. 1, 2000)

BANDED PLOVER ALERT: By Diane Arnirault, CWS

The Canadian Wildlife Service has colour banded 134 Piping Plover in an attempt to collect information on their movements. If you see colour banded Piping Plover, please record the date, location, and the colours of the bands as well as the leg on which the bands are located. Transmit this information to the CWS at 506-364-5060, by fax at 506-364-5062, or E-mail diane.amirault@ec.gc.ca

The colour codes are: yellow and green for Nova Scotia; white and light blue for New Brunswick; red and dark green for Prince Edward Island; and pink and dark blue for Newfoundland. Chicks were banded on the right-leg and adults on the right leg.

WEATHER EVENTS:

On January let, the convergence of a new moon, a storm driven tide, and a large low pressure system caused a storm surge to play havoc with some coastal communities around the province. Areas that were hard hit included Mount Stewart where significant portions of Main street and Egan Streets were covered in water and ice, Tryon marsh (Bideau bridge covered in water), Charlottetown (Brighton Road, Grafton Street, West Street, and Victoria Park), Fullerton's Marsh Bridge (covered in ice and water) and other communities. Ben and Rosalie Hoteling in Tryon were one of the families affected. They noted that an early resident of their home, a Mr. Maybee, reported that a storm surge event had flooded their barn when he was a child in the early part of the last century.

AMPHIBIANS: A single Leopard Frog was seen on the Donagh Road near the headwaters of the Johnston's River flowage on Mar. 29 (JDM). A single Wood Frog was singing at Red Head Road and as single Spring Peeper was singing at Lakeside on Mar. 30th (MK). A new reptile and amphibian atlas will commence this spring.
