A call to thanksgiving and prayer in commemmoratlon of the hund- redlh anniversary oi the Roman Ca- tholic diocese of Charlottetown was rounded in the pastoral letter oi His lordship Bishop L. J. Ohzary, which was read at the morning services in St. Damian's Cathedral here yester- “y. ..

It was announced that, aa a man- ner of celebrating exteriorly the great festival of the anniversary, it was decided to hold in Charlottetown on June 27th, the solemn consecra- iion oi St. Damian's Cathedral the mother church of the Diocese. It is hoped that His Excellency the Apos- tolic Delegate will perform the cere- mony. The present year, it was an- nounced. also marks the seventy- ilith anniversary of the founding of Si. Dunstan's University and the ni- tieth anniversary of the commence- ment oi the Charlottetown Hospital Each of these events will be celebrat- ed at an appropriate time during the year.

In his Pastoral Letter his Lordship rays:

“The cycle of time passing from the future to the past places before us mnny reasons for rejoicing, many periods particularly marked out for us in letters o! Joy. flfiftfare times oi universal rejoicing in the Church, the ieasts of Christmas and Easter, the years of Jubilee and other per- iods in which the whole body of Christians express their happiness. some are days that appeal merely to the individual or family as birthdays anniversaries and are days of joy and siadness for the immediate cir- cie of friends. Others are periods that appeal to the faith and love oi an entire Diocese and serve as a reason l" happy celebrations on the pars oi the entire diocesan flock.

‘Capt. Rhude Of Stanley Lauded At North Sydney

NORTH SYDNEY, Feb. l8-An event oi unusual interest took place h: the Eastern Club rooms this even- ing, about six o'clock, when Captain Rhudc oi the S. S. Stanley was pre- sented with a gold headed walking cane, by the business men of the town, in token oi being the first Captain to bring a. foreign ship lnw port for the year 1939.

This idea was based upon s. custom of this nature, yearly carried out at Montreal.

D. B. MacLcod: M. P. R, for Vic- toria County, made the presentation. and extolled Captain Rhude for his heroic rescue of the S. S. Tame, and for his gallant and successful effort in bringing here for medical treat- ment. two women from the north of the island.

As Mr. MacLeod accompanied the Captain on his erand o! mercy, he was able to give a realistic account of the ‘hazardous Journey. when. close pressed by ' iy endless ice fields. the hope oi making port seemed hopeless to the inexperienced iandsman, C ,‘ in Rhude, confident, calm and capable, met the test splend- idly and succeeded in bringing his ship into the open water oi the northern coast. \

A motor boat was launched and- two passengers transferred to shun. after which the two sick women brought on board and tbs lee-break- er started on her return trip.

She arrived here about 7.30 Wed- nesday evening, and her two passen- gera were taken immediately to Hamilton Hospital. where they were succcarully operated on Thursday morning.

The memorial tablet erected in the Salvation Army Citadel, was unveil- ed yesterday afternoon by His Wor- ship Mayor .Yeo who was supported by Judge Stewart. The Citadel was full to capacity with Salvationistc. members oi the local Masonic-Frater- nity. and interested citizens met on common ground to pay tribute to the noble life and work of one oi Charlot- tctownb own sons. The latc Bisign Charles Squarebriggs. to whose me- mory the memorial stands entered the Salvation Army work as an of- ficer over twenty years ago. and WIS one of the most popular and success- ful in the Canada East Territory. He was led to Jesus Christ ea his Sav- iour. by his own brother. Field Major Wm. Squarebriggs, and on his death bed thanked his ‘ for that act. The late Ensign scored many achieve- ments aa a. Salvation Army officer. in such cities as ‘Ibronto, Hamilton. Chatham and Kitchener, Ont. In the two latter cities he accomplished the task of re-buildlng the Army Cita- dels. 1n Kitchener the building was opened during his term of office. In Chatbam, Ont. he lust completed the task oi raising the funds before he wee called to his eternal reward. Yesterday the aeroplane left Monc- ton at 10 a. m. for Charlottetown. but on account of poor visibility, there being a heavy-fog prevatling-off-the island Coast. was forced to land at Tryon. Before making this landing the pilot narrowly escaped hitting the roof of a building so close did he have to go to the surface to see where he was. He made a good landing in a small field belonging to Mr. Bowlcy beard, but broke through a seven strand barb wire fence.
