This work will be in addition to the experimental work which is be- ing done on sections oi secondary roads with cold mixed asphalt, boih mixed in place and plant mixed, to which reference was made some time ago in The Guardian. These sec-' lions, costing considerably less than the process to be employed 0n ihc Charlottetown-Borden highway, are being laid to determine whether, as in other Provinces, they will stand up m winter conditions satisfactorily. A milo stretch at North River, and another mile ut Soul-is beach, have been completed under this plan. There is approximately a mile at Hampton Corner which is partly constructed and workmen are also engaged on an experimental stretch at Souihport near the cross-roads.

Hon. Mr. Sharp was slgnally hon- oured at the Canadian Good Roads Association convention at, Murray Bay by being elected president for the ensuing year. This is the first time since the Association was form- ed tweilty-olle years ago that a Prince Edward Island representative was chosen for this position. The engine crew, however, dis- obeyed the order and put the en- gines into neutral.

This testimony was given by an 18-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology student, William Wes- ley Tripp, who was on. the tragic voyage from Havana as n radct en- gnieer.

Tripp, whose praise of the engine room crew was echoed by Dickerson M. Hoover, head of the steamboat hispectior. service and acndileior of the inquiry. read into evidence the copy of orders he scratched down from the bell sheet as the crew down below worked in the intense heat and dense smoke.

Tripp said Arthur Stamper, the third engineer left in charge of the engine room, put the engines in neutral instead.

Had the orders been obeyed, the ship would have circled around —- with passengers and life boats inthe water about it—-for at least eight

The telegraph between the engine room and bridge did not fail, testi- mony has shown, until 3:29 A. M. (all times Eastern Standard) when lights went oil nil over.

Between 3:21 and 3:29, there were no further orders from the bridge, according to Tripp's private log which he gave to the Ward Line and which later was furnished both to Hoover's inquiry and to the federal grand jury.

“I think the engine room crew acted splendidly,” Tripp said.

"I think so too" replied Hoover.
