Notes from Souris.
Several very handsome private residences are now in course of construction here. First there is Mr. Uriah Matthew’s, of the firm of Matthew, McLean & Co. Situated on a very convenient lot, and commandimg a full view of the Bay, this house, when completed, will be one of the finest in town. It is a two storey building, with bay windows, and wing with double look-out. Mr. C. S. Sterns is also building a handsone two storey dwelling, with bay windows, front and end, and all the modern improvements. Mr. James Paquet is just completing a very neat cottage. A few tenement houses are also being erected.
The railway station has lately received a coat of canary colored paint, which makes it look quite aesthetic.
There are a large number of men at present engaged in repairing the Break water. Business is flourishing. Business

Several American seiners are still here waiting for more favorable weather for fishing. The shoreman are getting a few, but mackerel are very shy of the hook and_ still more so of the seine.
The thunder storm on Tuesday evening was the most violent of the season. It was accom- panied by hail and rain, which did consider- to crops and windows in some localities in the eastern part of the Island. The storm came up from the southwest, pass- ing over Souris nearly directly overhead. At West River, Lot 47, the lightning struck a barn belonging to Mr. James Robertson, and soon it and its contents, which consisted of six tons of hay, a mower and reaper, ploughs, harnesses and eighty or ninety hens and chickens, were in flames. The lightning and the flames were almost simultaneous, the fire breaking out at* the two gable ends of the barn as soon as struck. Mr. Robertson had

My house, as you are aware, stands in an isolated and exposed situation, yet during the coldest weather the heat could be regulated to any desirable temperature My experi- ence leads me to believe that the hot water system of heating, as put in by you, is superior to all other forms of heating I have seen, in its saving of fuel and labor, simplicity of working, cleanliness, and safety from fire, and I hereby recommend it as being the most healthful, comfortable, safe and economical in use.
