Tur Bishop of Fredericton has given to our students of Holy Scripture a valuable book. Not that his work is only for tho e who can give much time to study. Its brief but clear notes, concise summaries, and interesting introduction, make it an ex- cellent manual for ordinary readers. It would be a capital ‘‘ Sunday” book for any one willing to give a little attention to get a better understanding of a most interest- inganddiflicult portion of the Bible. Though written by a very learned man, there is not a word that an ordinary English reader cannot understand. The Bishop has used his knowledge of Hebrew, Greek and Latin to enable him to give us a book in good, plain English. There is also nothing in any sense ‘‘sectarian” init. The work of a Catholic minded man, it gives informa tion useful to all classes, without offending any.

in the introduction, the Bishop deals (among other matters) with the difficulties that meet a translator with the question of the authority of the book and its moral, and he considers one or two difliculties that suggest themselves. In this part we meet a slight inaccuracy, which will, no doubt, be corrected in the next edition. At page XXX, discussing the personality of Satan, and pointing out the remarkable change from singular to plural in St. Luke xxi, 3L $2., the Bishop quotes and italicises as follows : ‘‘Simon, Simon, Satan hath de- sired to have thee that he may sift you af wheat.” A reference to the passage will show that the change occurs in another part of the sentence, **Simon, Simon, Satan hath desired to have you, to sift you as wheat, but I have prayed for thee.”

The suromaries to the chapters are spe, cially useful—showing their connection which in this book is not always evident, and thus enabling the reader to follow the arguments and counter-arguments of the characters in this sacred drama. It is very necessary that persons should have their attention called to the ‘‘ unity” of the vari- eus books of the Bible. Generally speak- ing there is too much reading by chapters instead of by books. Who could expect to get a clear idea of—say one of Shake- speare’s plays—if it were arbitrarly broken up into some twenty or thirty portions, and he were to read only one of these at a time? At the end of a month he would have got through with it. Certain striking passages would probably remain in his mind. But of the general scope of the play and the con- nection of its parts he would have no idea whatever. Yet this is the» only way that many persons read their Bibles—no part of which loses more by being so read than the Book of Job. Sometimes persons seriously quote from it the sayings of Job’s friends as though they were the words of an in- spired authority. The summaries as given will be of very great help to any one who wants. to read the Book through. The notes just give a few words of assistance in difficult passages. They are notso long as to delay the reader until he has lost the connection, but they are full enough to re- move difficulties out of his way.

In the translation the Bishop has ad- opted the arrangement which preserves the poetical form of the original. Hebrew poetry depending not upon metre, but upon parailelism, it can be translated into an-

other language without losing its poetical |

form. In many places this translation gives a much clearer sense than the authorized version; and it is throughout, elegant, forcible, and spirited. We give two specimen passages; one (ch, xxxix, 19-25), the well-known description of the War horse ; the other (ch. xxii, 27 to end) is one in which the difference from the authorized version is greater than in most other places :—

Canst thou give strength to the horse ? Canst thou clothe his neck with terror?

Canst thou make him spring as the locust? The glory of his neighing is terrible.

He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength, He goeth forth to confront the armed host.

He mocket!: at fear, and is not affrighted, And turhetn not back from the sword.

The quiver rattleth oe him, The dechio : spear and the javelin.

He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage, an

At every blast of the trumpet he saith, “Aha!”

The Bishop is a master of English. It is a pleasure to read his terse, crisp sentences with their carefully chesen words. By the way, it is « little disappointing te find one who has such a command of good,pure Eng- lish, giving his sanctien to that barbarous imitation of German, “‘stand-point,” which we are sorry to see,in several places. There is a good English idiom for the idea which the cumberous Germanico-Anglicism‘labors to express. If such writers as the Bisho of Fredericton encourage these tricks wit the language, it will be hard for weaker men to do anything to keep it pure. We

VHE Proyress reports : “The new Judge was born at Lot 34, ia this Province in 183%, and is therefore 43 years ¢ fage. He studied law in St. John,- N. b., in the office of the Hon. Charles Watters ‘and was called to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1864, and to that of this Island ia the following year, and immediately commenced the prac- tice of his profession in Summerside, where he has resided for the last four-

teen years. He was twice elected to the House of Assembly from the 5th district of Prince County, and was appointed Railway Commissioner in 1872, and defeated at the last General Electin by a small majority. INCENDIARY Fire.—Yesterday evening at four o'clock the’ stable owned by Mrs. T. Dawson, situated in the rear of her dwelling- house on Grafton street, was discovered en tire. ‘The steam enyines and Hook and Lad- der Co. were quickly on the scene, but their services were not required as a few buckets of water promptly extinguished the flames before much damage was done. ‘The fire originated in rear of the stable and when discovered the blaze was creeping by degrees up the outside walls, It was undoubtedly lit by an incen- diary, as marks of carpenter's wood, shavings, and asmall box, were found where tlie fire was set-underneath the main sill. This stable was set on fire in the same place about eighteen months ago by some unknown per- son. The police have no suspicions of the present incendiary, nor have they obtained a clue, save the small box that was found among the burned shavings, and as there are no marks on it, its owner will no doubt escape detection. This fire makes the third, caused by incendiarism, within a week.
