He Says that women exhibit but few con- spciuous traces of emotional influence upon facial nutrition as compared witit men of mature whereupon the speaker remarks:

“Now we know why the wicked lady in novels usually looks angelic, ana gazes at a confiding man with a bins eye which secms to him lke a celestial messenger. The viliian always carries proofs of guilt in his jaw or his eye- lids; but the adventuress cannot be ds- tinguished facially from tne imege oZ innocence. This pheromenon does not become more intelligible in the light of Dr. Robinson's scienve. Why should not ‘Special «motional stimuli’ cause a ‘deviation in features of loveiy woman ? Why does the machinery o. nutrition throw up the brush, so to speak, and refuse to adorn the daugh- ters of Eve with the warning s'gnals Which are visible on the features of man? How many a pang would be spared our unsuspecting breasts, coull we but see the real Blanche Armory on the canvas, as it were, and discern the schemes of the artful Beatrix hung on the line ! Woman ought to be the crowning exempilification of our phy- siognomist’s system or pictorial betray- al; and yet she baffles him so complete ly that he escapes f:om the problem under a cloud of werds.”

But it seems that this is not the most serious defect of Dr. Robinson‘s general principles. Accider.t, he admits, may make the just man jook Lke a s-oun- drel; “for,” says he, “the molecular impulses welling forth from a distenc- ed emotional centre may chance to flow along channels usually occupied by less innocent currents, and may produce an impre*sion nearly id niical with thac Which acectapanies some form of vice.”

“You may be as honest as the day; you may be the joy of all who rea iy know you; and yet you are fated i» carry the stamp of infamy merely i cause the ‘molecu!ar impuises’ have a sense of ironical humor ! In such a case it will be seen that, in spite of out- ward appearances, not only is there no guilt, but there may be also a com- plete absence of evil inclination.’ In this airy way Dr. Robinson dismisses a mystery which is of vastly more im- portance to the community than his speculations about the cause of the village blacksmith’s frown, and the in- fluence of malt liquor on the brewer's drayman...... Does this facetious phys- iognomist plunge us into despair mere- ly for his own amusement ? In our opinion, every man of blamelJess cha-- acter and evil countenance ought to call on Dr. Robinson, and put him to the question.

Let our friends with the hand-dos look and the heart of gold, with the open purse and the g ance of avarice, with the gentle tongue and the for- bidding scowl, wait on the oracle in a body, and demand why their machinery of nutrition, which is in admirabie working order, produces such facial vagaries. Is it destiny or diet ? Shall they become vegetarians, or submit to the unmerited torture of an inexorable caprice ?”’—Literary Digest,

fore the animal realizes where the nev~ strange light comes from. This paus , which he makes before endeavoring to escape, is quite sufficient to enable the sportsman to take aim and place a large, substantial bullet in a vital part of the tiger's body.

“At present,” savs the this system, in a letter to The Scientific American, “I use a battery of six large

Its recommendéations sre that the bat- tery is good for the next ten years, and

the cells with water, and sometimes a little fresh sal ammoniac. As I cau only go shooting during six months of the year this is a great advantage. The method of using is as follows :—From ihe box containing the cells I have a line of wire (double, of course), say 3 to 40 feet long, slipped onto each ent of the box by butterfiy nuts, the lamp. which is tied to a branch of a tree. immediately over, say, 20 Mot high, the bait being at the other end.

“At about two yards from the bat- tery there is a connection, I think call- ed a male switch. A short line of wire about three or four feet long, makes the connection to the fore end of my rifle; at one end cf the short length is a female switch to fit on to the above male one, and at the other end two small rings are made of the wires. These rings are fastened by two big- headed screws to the bed of the con- nection. On hearing the tiger at the kill, I aim :s nearly in the direction as I can, then a slight pressure of the thumb makes the electric connection and the light opens right over the ti- ger.”

This scientific sportsman also em- ployed accumulators, but they did not. seem to be adapted to such rough work. He-is now fitting himself with a battery which may be carried on the belt like cartridges,

Thirty such batteries carried in this Way, would, it is estimated, be sufi- cient to provide a 16-candle power light. This system of night hunting, it has been suggested, might well be employ- ed in hunting big game in the Rockies. —New York World.

In an article on Huxley the Evening Post eulogizes him for the service he did in behalf of intellectual freedom and honesty. Describing the incredibie state of affairs when he stepped into the controversial arena, it says :

“It is impossible for anyone not of middie age to understand the feeling toward scientific enquiry which pre- vailed when Huxley began his public career. It is enough to say that Tardly anyone, either in England or America dared to express free!y the conclusions which he reached, after honest and conscientious study, concerning the age of the world or the history of animal life. Not only the clergy, but the great mass of the laity, were suspicious of Scientific men as a class, regarding them as prone to infidelity, and mater- ialism, and in order to secure a favor- able hearing it was necessary for the man of science to begin by announcing that his conclusions would He found to be quite in harmony with the truths of revealed religion. Agassiz was near- ly canonized for declaring that men were the children of God, aad not the children of apes, and we could men- tion instances where professors only kept their chairs by following the ex- ample of Gallileo.”

When he died, it had ceased to be necessary for a man of sciemce to apologize for his views or to show that they harmonized with current concep- tions.

Her Kented Pew.

In a large church in this city, which is always over-crowded with worship- pers, there are some pew-holders who more frequently invite strangers out of their pews than in them. Last Sunday morning a week ago the wife of a civil! rervice commissioner attended this church, and the usher seated her in a vacant pew, well toward the froni. Just before the organist played the opening hymn there was a rustling of silks and a jingling of jet beads in the aisle, and a lady appeared beside the pew. She glared at the occupant and stood still a moment ; then rustied and jingied herself out again. In another moment the usher appeared, politely asked the lady to allow him to show her to another seat, and gave her one opposite. Then the silk and jetted lady returned and devouily tcok her seat.— Washington Post.
