CITY POLICE COURT-At the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court yesterday, nine men charged with being drunk and incapable appear- ed-. One was sentenced to 20 days in jail, four fined 510 and costs or 10 days each. and three fined 35 and costs or 6 days each. The remain- ing drunk was remanded until November iflth. A drunk and dis- orderly was also fined 520 and costs or 20 days and a man con- victed of speeding was fined 85 and costs or 10 days.

WILL MEET FEDERAL GAB- l.Nl:'l'--At the Liberal convention at March on Friday Premier Jones announced that he and Premier McNalr of New Brunswick will go to Ottawa on Nov. so to meet the Federal cabinet in an attempt to work out I. solution to the potato growers' problem which apply particularly to the two Maritime Provinces. They will take along with them several advisers who are in close touch with the potato sit- uation. Premier Jones did not in- dicate whom his advisers would be but said "we will argue it out as but we can." .

”How good are Prince Edward Island pigs?" is the question asked and answered in a highly compli- mentary article appearing in the current lame of "the Country Guide,” a leading farm loumal published in Winnipeg. The auth- or. Mr. F. M. Baker, is the West- ern representative of the Industrial and Development Council of Can- ada Meat Packers. and he I00! fully into the achievement of Is- land hog breeders since 1922.

. At. that time. Mr. Harold W. Clay, senior livestock fieldlnan for the Province. commenced work as a grader at the Charlottetown plant. The writer pays warm iri- ibute to Mr. Clay's work in develop- ing the quality of Island hogs during succeeding years. This achievement is highlighted by the statemerit that out of the Canadian total of 642 rows and 57 boars qualifying in Advanced Registry in the two year period June 1948. through May. 1950, the Island had 291 rows and 31 bears.

some excerpts from Mr. Baker's article follow: y.

"rho Provincial Boar Bonus Policy. under which all Class A boars standing for pulolic service are bonused by a cash grant of 512 per year, with 38 for Class B boars. and under which policy it. is necessary for all boars to be inspected at least once a year. has been another very important link in improvement. This inspection has been turned over by the pro- vincial department to Clay and his Dominion men. They used their trips to inspect and discuss the whole herd with the owner; to recmrnnend elimination and re- placement of certain sows and boars; and to review generally the whole conduct. of pig operations on a farm.

"So well has such advice been given and received that Clay and his men stand in the unique posi- tion of being at. the same time in- speciors for, guides to, counsellors and friends of, all breeders. They also are the practical salesmen for the breeders. No pig is sold for ex- port from the Island without Clay being consulted. Without fear or favor. he does not hesitate to cull those which do not come up to his standards and, in the main. he fixes the price at which the ac- cepted pigs go to new buyers. In effect. Prince Edward Island is one large. centrally supervised breeding unit as far as pigs are concerned, and so far. the results have been of the best.

Western Reaction

t'rhc first Island pigs to come West. were ordered by mail by one or two far-sighted breeders. In 1946. a csrload of breeding stock was split between Manitoba. Sas- katchewan and Northern Alberta. In 1947, another can1osdlestabl:ish- ed a number of Advanced Regis- try Breeding Clubs west of Sas- katoon. under the direction of C. A. Cooke of the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture. In 1948. the additions within those clubs were used to start additional clubs in the northwest section of the province. In 1948, also. a car- load of stock was divided between Saskatchewan and Northern Ai- berta. and still another went to Southern Saskatchewan and Cen- tral Alberta.

"In 1949. the swine bx-eederr section of the Prince Albert (Sask.) Agricultural Society paid 8500 for old Woodstock Duke 14A (the boar which had made an outstanding breeding record on the Island). is bu-ed sows and gllts for members of the section. and an extra ten bled gills. which were brought along at the same time to help do. my expenses. Later sold at auc- tion. these gllts averaged 8187 each and cleared enough over their C09 t0 Pay for the boar. all ex- pensu of shipment. and leave some money with the section.

"At this w-ritlnl. two additional carloads, 144 head in all, are be- ing. distriibuted from Winnipeg. Of this quantity. all but ten head are ilrom sows which have fully qualified in Advanced Registry with carcass scores ranging from B0 to 94 points. Certainly worth mention. too, is he cal-load of young gills and boars which the Island Swine Breeders' Association donated for free distribution among the flooded farmers of the Red River Valley in June of this year.

Cause of Argument

At the Edmonton mring sale of bred sows. 1940, ten sows by an Island boar averaged 3137, while 98 others. with no Island blood. "Nd! Only 895. At. the same sale a year later, 15 lialuf-bred Island sows made an avenge of 8116 each. as compared with 0105 for 29 others. bought some 40 boats for its Muni- cipal Boar Policy, although never more than half a dozen had been purchased at that sale before.

"At the Saskatoon Advanced Registry Sale of boars and lows, Seoterrilber, 194D, 12 head. the get of one Island boar, included the champion boar and the champion and reserve gills. The five boars averaged 3176. compared with 392 for 20 other boars in the sale; while the seven gills averaged S112, com- pared with 877 for the other seven gills sold.

"At the Regina Fall Show, 1949, the coveted Breeder-Feeder tro- phy for boar. gilt and market hog from one litter, was won by pigs from an Island sow. and like hon- ors in the same event at the Bran- don Show in 1948 went to the get of an Island boar. The trophy for the highest-scoring sow qualifying in Advanced Registry in Saskatche- wan in 1949 went to a sow of pure Island breeding, Payndale Em- press 2913. with s carcass score of 90 points . . .

"Western Canada has not been alone in appreciation of the bacon quality of Island hogs. At the 1949 Toronto Royal, the premier carcass award of the swine show. the Brethour irophy for the best Wiltshire side. went to an Island exhibitor, and others placed first in a very strong class. for pen of three live bacon hogs. In the last. year or two there has been an in- creasing demand for Island breed- lng stock by Ontario breeders, and probably by now, Quebec has tak- en as many Island pigs as have been shipped to the West.

"The United States has also been interested. and single -boars and sows have been shipped to many of the leading breeders and institutions there. not to mention three consecutive carload ship- ments to Davenport. Iowa, the heart of lfhe Corn Belt.

"Needless to say. Clay and his breeders have 'been.grat.ified by the increasing demand for their products. but at the same time they appreciate the necessity of strict adherence to the high standards they have set for themselves, if this export market is to continue. In the five years during which the writer has been familiar with Is- land pigs on their home farms. great improvement has been made. Testing and selection have weed- ed out the very extreme types,

without sacrificing anything in carcass quality or maturity.

"The present end results are sows and boars which should be of great value in any district where hogs are beginning to lack a bit of length. or need refining of the shoulders, or where over- finlsh at an early age has been preventing other-wise good hogs from making Grade A carcasses."

Mr. Alllen stated that the Nom- inating Committee. under the chairmanship of Mr. Alan Nichol- son. held its first meeting immedi- ately after the open meeting at the L.P.U. Hall last week. and de- cided several major points. includ- ing the distribution of seats on the Executive Committee. The mem-

Mr. Wilfred Smith. chairmen of the campaign and publicity com- mittee. reported that the general campaign for funds throughout Lhe Island will begin on Nov. 20 and will continue until Nov 30. The objective to be presented to the citizeriis meeting Friday night for approval has been set at 510,000. The campaign will be on a dooi--to- door basis in the cities. with the Women's Institutes in the various rural communities looking after the collecting in their areas.

Win Department. of Agriculture

One notable exception of co- operation in serving the welfare needs of the Island people was given yesterday when the Cana- dian Red Cross Society through its director. Miss I-phigenle Arsen- ault. generously donated furnished office space for ihe use of the new organization during the campaign for funds, and until such time as permanent office space can be ob- tained. The workers for the Children's Aid Society are highly appreciative of this encouraging gesture by the Red Cross Society.

As another example of citizen interest in. and support of the new organization. Mr. Allen pointed to the large attendance at the meet- ing in the L.P.U. Hall last Friday night. and to the guarantee of full cooperation in the work of the new Society made in behalf of the 1... P.U. and its Ladvlee' Auxiliary by Mr. Lemuel Bush. resident of the Union. The LP. . has also do- naled free use of its Hall for all meetings necessary in the re-or- ganisation of the C.A.S.

Al the meeting this -Friday night the executive committee and the board of trustees for the new or- ganization will be elected. and brief reports will be heard from the campaign committee and the commltiee on Constitution and By- law. It is proposed to have the meeting concluded in time to al- low those attending to attend to any commitments previously made for Friday night.

Inspects local Naval Division

Commander C. 1!. Little. Direct- or of the University Trairing Div- isions was in this city last Friday as he made his annual inspection of the Maritime Naval divisions. He stated that he was much im- pressed with the showing of the Cadets who turned out for inspect- ion, and greatly pleased with the improvements made to the local Naval establishment. Commander Little was accompanied on his in- spection of the local division by Lt. J. A. Mac.Lellan, Comsriandinz Officer of the local U.N.T.D. Before leaving the barracks he stated that the Navy is planning to have two frlgates and one dc- stroyer on each coast for the pur- pose of training members of the U. N. T. D. C

Retail Sales Up 9 Per Cent In Sept.

OTTAWA, Nov. 13 - (OP) - Sales in Canadian retail stores showed a "marked" gain of nine per cent, in September over the corresponding month of last year. the Bureau of Statistics said to- day. Increases were registered by 18 of the 20 trades reporting and in all Provinces except Saskatche- wan.

For the first nine months of the year, the over-all advance was 6.2 per cent.
